Research paper thumbnail of Evaluation of the effectiveness of platelet-rich plasma in surgical epidermal wounds in rabbits

The aimed of this research was to evaluate the impact of PRP on skin repair upon epidermal surgical lesions. Using a scalpel, a clean epidermal incision of 5cm length was made in the interscapular region of New Zealand rabbits (n=8), and then divided in two groups. Rabbits from the group 1 (n=4) were untreated (control group), while group 2 received PRP on the surgical wound. Autologous PRP was obtained from whole blood drawn by jugular vein puncture, collected with sodium citrate anticoagulant solution, and centrifuged at 120g x 5min. One milliliter was obtained of the phase superior to the buffy coat. Biopsies from the injured tissue were collected on days 3, 7, 14 and 21 post-surgeries, and submitted to Hematoxylin-Eosin and Masson's Trichrome staining. In conclusion, the platelets separation method allows to obtaining plasma with higher platelets concentration and reduced number of leukocytes. Additionally, the results show that therapeutic PRP administration on surgically-induced skin injury has effect on the histological features of tissue healing compared with the control group .

Research paper thumbnail of Diabetes alters inflammation, angiogenesis, and fibrogenesis in intraperitoneal implants in rats

Microvascular Research, 2014

This therapeutic procedure invariably leads to adverse tissue healing (foreign body reaction), thus impairing the biomedical device function of subcutaneous implants. However, the influence of diabetes on abnormal tissue healing in intraperitoneal implants is unclear. We investigated key components of foreign body reactions in diabetic rats. Polyether-polyurethane sponge discs were placed intraperitoneally in rats previously injected with streptozotocin for induction of diabetes and in non-diabetic rats. Implants removed 10 days after implantation were assessed by determining the components of the fibrovascular tissue (angiogenesis, inflammation, and fibrogenesis). In implants from diabetic rats, fibrous capsule thickness and fibrovascular tissue infiltration (hematoxylin & eosin and picrosirius staining) were reduced in comparison with implants from non-diabetic rats. Hemoglobin (Hb) content (vascular index) and VEGF levels (pro-angiogenic cytokine) were increased after diabetes. However, the number of vessels (H&E and CD31-immunostaining) in the fibrovascular tissue from diabetic rats was decreased when compared with vessel numbers in implants from non-diabetic animals. Overall, all inflammatory parameters (macrophage accumulation-NAG activity; TNF-α and MCP-1 levels) increased in intraperitoneal implants after diabetes induction. The pro-fibrogenic cytokine (TGFβ-1) increased after diabetes, but collagen deposition remained unaltered in the implants from diabetic rats. These important diabetes-related changes (increased levels of pro-inflammatory and angiogenic and fibrogenic cytokines) in peritoneal implant healing provide an insight into the mechanisms of the foreign body response in the diabetic environment in rats.

Several approaches methods for the diagnosis of the ovulation time are used for clinical purposes, including identification of changes in the external genitals, performing serial vaginal smears, microscopic evaluation of salivary smear, or the serial measurement of serum progesterone levels among others. This document describes the basic principles for monitoring the reproductive system in the bitch, as well as the main pathologies that affect this system. It concludes that the identification of behavioral, anatomical, hormonal and cellular changes observable throughout the estrous cycle are sensitive methods for monitoring reproductive system in the bitch.

Nalbuphine is an opioid kappa agonist/mu antagonist that produces moderate to severe analgesia (3) and has been used in premedication, surgery, and the postoperative period of obstetric and pediatric practices focused on controlling pain associated with burns (4) . Nalbuphine activity depends on the dose, application site, and sex of the patient . Studies on the analgesic effects of nalbuphine on the cornea have shown that instillation reduces the corneal sensitivity to touch in dogs . In contrast, nalbuphine has been demonstrated to sometimes cause damage to the corneal epithelium and stromal fibroblasts . It is unclear if nalbuphine can impair the expression of enzymes and growth factors involved in corneal wound healing.
