(Delprete & C.H.Perss.)] is as recent as 1948, its several traditional uses in gastronomy and medicine, and its fame as an aphrodisiac are long standing and strong: the “love juice” extracted from it is very appreciated in Colombia, Ecuador, and Panama. Its medicinal potential, though, is far wider. This literature review aims to summarize the knowledge about the fruit, its ethnomedical uses, its biological activity and phytochemical composition, to validate ethnomedical claims and to help envision future lines of research. Borojó extracts have confirmed antimicrobial and antioxidant, and potential anticancer activities, which can be at least partially explained by its phytochemical composition -compounds isolated and identified through Gas Chromatography, High Performance Liquid Chromatography and spectroscopic and spectrometric techniques- rich in phenolic compounds, some of which, for example oleuropein, chloroge...

The peach palm is an integral part of the foodways and gastronomy of Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, Peru, Brazil, and other tropical American countries; meanwhile, it is almost unknown in the rest of the world, except for hearts of palm. Although abundant, the species faces anthropogenic threats. The purpose of this study is to describe and summarize the physicochemical, nutritional, and bioactive characteristics of the peach palm and its two main alimentary products: hearts of palm and fruits, highlighting the functional and antioxidant potential of the latter, showing both ancestral and modern uses. There is active research on peach palm products and coproducts that aim for better, more sustainable uses of its traditional and recently found prop...

Multiple studies have shown genotoxic effects of different pollutants; however, to our knowledge, the impact of environmental stress on genetic damage has been scarce explored. In some stressful ecosystems, such as seasonally dry tropical forests, the combined effects of anthropogenic activities and ongoing global changes cause increased environmental stresses that could trigger physiological and genetic effects on biodiversity. In this study, we evaluated the changes in the prevalence of genotoxic damage to birds in three states of forest degradation in the Tumbesian Region of Western Ecuador. We used the blood samples of 52 bird species to determine the frequency of micronucleus and nuclear abnormalities in the erythrocytes. Our results showed a significant effect of forest degradation in the proportion of micronucleus and nuclear abnormalit...

Therefore, all approaches to drug discovery and development should be exploited. Argentatin B (1) is a cycloartane triterpene isolated from Parthenium argentatum with inhibitory activity on tumor lines. The aim of this study is to investigate the inhibitory effect of 1 and 10 derivatives on the proliferation of a human colon cancer cell line (RKO), their genotoxic effects on human lymphocytes, as well as their potential effect on tumor protein (TP)-p53 and TP73 expression and phosphorylation. Argentatin B was found to induce reduced survival of RKO cells and showed a cytostatic effect. However, it did not induce apoptosis of RKO cells at the concentrations tested. Argentatin B and its derivatives were found to arrest the cell cycle at the G 1 phase. The bromine 2 and oxime 6 derivatives were more active than 1. Furthermore, 1 and its bromine (2) and oxime (6) derivatives induced phosphorylation of (TP)-p53 and TP73. Nevertheless, 2 exhibited a greater genotoxic effect on normal human lymphocytes than 6.

Many articles have evaluated the impact of oil spills on human health. However, most of these articles focus on occupational exposure. The effect on people living in the areas affected by oil pollution is rarely studied. Approximately 640 million people worldwide live in areas at risk of oil pollution. Thus, studying the impact of this pollution on human health should be a priority. Here, we evaluate the presence of anemia in relation to crude oil exposure in men living in areas at risk of oil contamination in the Ecuadorian Amazon (Orellana and Napo). We evaluated the hematological and biochemical parameters of 135 participants. We divided the participants into three groups according to exposure: low, medium, and high. Our results showed a significant association between exposure risk and hemoglobin and hematocrit concentration. Groups with medium- and high- contamination exposure had levels below normal values in hemoglobin and hematocrit in more than 30% and 26% of the population, respectively. In conclusion, we found that crude oil affected human health, and the prevalence of the anemia in men was dependent of the level of contamination.

We focused on the sesquiterpene lactone onoseriolide from <i>Hedyosmum racemosum</i>, which is widely used in traditional medicine. This compound was evaluated to determine its cytotoxic effect and the mechanism of cell death that is induced in the human colon cancer cell line RKO. A dose-dependent decrease in cell viability was observed. p53 expression increased followed by an increase in p21 expression, which is involved in cell cycle arrest in the G2/M phase. Caspase-3 activation and PARP-1 cleavage, which are apoptotic markers, were also monitored. Autophagy markers were also studied, and Beclin 1 was downregulated, while LC-3II increased in a dose-dependent manner. There were no changes in SQSTM1/p62 regulation. Onoseriolide exerts cytotoxic and cytostatic effects, activating the autophagy pathway as a protective mechanism and apoptosis as the ...

We developed a spatial model of contamination risk in the Ecuadorian Amazon, and evaluated the model using independent datasets on environmental contamination and clinical indicators of human health risk factors. Methods: the spatial risk of contamination for the Napo River basin was based on the calculation of a friction surface and the accessibility of possible oil contamination. Human health was evaluated using peripheral blood samples from 256 individuals. We used monitoring data on contamination to validate the spatial model of contamination risk and analyzed whether the estimated risk explained the incidence of human health risk factors. Results: our risk model showed a significant association with actual contamination detected in the study area. According to our risk model, around 30% of ...
