The literature has found that schools play an important role in supporting immigrant students to navigate a new culture, especially by selecting and providing appropriate texts for learning. Since students’ interaction with texts can mediate knowledge and identity construction, what cultural information and whose culture is embedded in the texts matter for language learning. As such, we wondered what texts a teacher would use to bridge the minority culture of the students with the majority culture in which the students lived. One teacher’s language arts class with 20 students at one American Islamic school was observed for one academic quarter and then described using a case study method. We qualitatively analyzed classroom observations, field notes, teacher interviews, and teacher and student work samples. We found that the teacher was able to...

However, current condition of COVID-19 outbreak has forced students to adjust their learning environment to be fully digitalized. This study investigates the preferences and behaviors of Indonesian undergraduate students in reading their academic materials during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 318 students from eight universities across Indonesia participated in this study. They were voluntarily asked to respond to an online questionnaire adopted from Mizrachi (2015). The questionnaire focuses on the reading formats that the students prefer (print vs. electronic) and factors that motivate their choices. The data was then analyzed descriptively. Despite of the current demands of digital reading, the results revealed that most of the students still favored print format for their academic materials. Nevertheless, various factors that contributed to the students’ preferences were mentioned, including types of courses, accessibility, and print reading habits, which resulted to the students’ lack of confidence upon electronic material. Further research should be conducted to better understand on how such factors affect students’ favorableness of print material over electronic one.

Identifying best instructional practices to foster literacy learning of ELLs has been an urgent priority in research given the fact that the ELLs population continues to increase. Teachers in the U.S classrooms need to be equipped with sufficient knowledge and skills to meet the needs of these students. In this paper, current understanding of teaching literacy to ELLs in elementary classroom is presented, which revolve around discussion of oral language, complex text, and teacher engagement which is both culturally and linguistically relevant.

The conception of literacy has been shifting from the lens of formal literacy learning in school settings into broader opportunities in sociocultural contexts, and some may exclusively look at the intersection between the two. In this article, I discuss the concept of continuities of literacy development and out-of-school literacy practices by carefully interpreting empirical research that have been done in the last decade. The discussion in this article enriches the notion of literacy learning that diverse settings of literacy practices, parents’ role, and various available texts are significant predictors to the continuities of literacy development. I argue that ESL learners independently mediate their own literacy development either at school or community by taking advantages of rich opportunities available at...

We drew upon the notion of communicative repertoires and English as an International Language (EIL) to explain how gestures, turn-taking habits, and different dialects shaped the interaction among students during the process of English language learning. Methodology: The research method was a case study in which classroom observation, field notes, interviews, and documentation were carried out as the tools for data collections. The data were then analyzed qualitatively and were discussed within various perspectives from scholars in the related discipline to explain the findings of this study. Main Findings: We found that the participants used some forms of communicative repertoires (i.e., gestures, turn-takings, and dialects) that are culturally-bound to their own heritage culture. Although the use of these trai...

We found that the teacher was able to use both academic texts, virtual texts, and teacher-created documents to explore some of the issues that the students face on a daily basis. This study further adds to the existing knowledge that culturally relevant texts may mediate students' understanding of the larger socio-historical contexts in which they reside including a chance to develop language skills necessary for communication and learning.

Pretend-play and peer culture are worth investigating to better understand children’s social development that might have implication for their success in education. Two observation data were obtained from a university-based Child Care Center, and one from an Indonesian family who have lived in the U.S. for three years. 12 children aged three to four years old and two kindergarten teachers were involved during the observation. The observations lasted for about 40 minutes. The findings suggest that the children were involved in different kinds of play: (1) spontaneous fantasy, and (2) socio-dramatic play. Spontaneous fantasy is when childr...

Hikayat was referred to narratives (saga) of war rooted in Acehnese cultural tradition, and Prang Sabi in Acehnese language meant ‘Holy War’. As a literary work, Hikayat Prang Sabi embodied the concept of jihad, which was usually sung during the time of war in the Acehnese history: Portuguese in 1511, Dutch in 1873, Japan in 1942, and the Republic of Indonesia in 1976. The source of the data was verses or stanzas of Hikayat Prang Sabi that contained patriotic values. These verses were then treated as the unit of analysis. A hermeneutic approach was employed to analyze the data. The findings show that Hikayat Prang Sabi contains two types of patriotic values: national and religious. National value refers to the sense of nationalism, ethnicity, and humanity. Religious value, on the other hand, displays the value of spirituality, prophecy, and peace. These values indicat...

The research method used was survey design hereby the data from the questionnaire and students' TOEFL score were collected. Under the policy, the students have to pass the standard passing score of TOEFL to graduate. 100 non-English major students from Universitas Teuku Umar participated in this study. The results of the study revealed that the participants gave more positive responses than negative ones. The extend of approval for this policy seemed more related to their abilities, awareness of the importance of learning English, and motivation to learn English. The result from TOEFL scores taken from 2018-2019 found that as many as 58% of students failed to obtain minimum criteria (˃ 400) while only 42% of them reached 400 or above. It indicates that Universitas Teuku Umar students are not ready yet to face this policy. On the other hand, based on the questionnaire r...

As such, monitoring child growth and development is pivotal to determine necessary intervention and prevention. With technological advancement, monitoring child growth and development has become more accessible. The main objective of this paper is to explain the process of designing an Android software application for anthropometry, hearing test, and visual test to monitor children's developmental status. We employed to research and development methods, including need analysis, data collection, application design, user trial, and evaluation. The findings showed that the application could monitor growth and development in children from the age of zero to 72 months based on anthropometric testing related to auditory and visual stimul...
