Although also research on platforms and platforms has expanded, there seems to be a great gulf between IT- and social research on these issues. In this article, I show, using sociologist Maurizio Lazzarato’s concepts, that the technical infrastructure of the platform, in particular the algorithm, has a direct impact on work and the agency of the platform worker. From this perspective, it is possible to ask critical questions about platforms and platform work from a multidisciplinary viewpoint. Methodologically, an ethnographic approach that sees algorithms as part of culture, with its own institutions, impact on people and intersection with different contexts, could support co-operation between different disciplines. When such an approach is combined with insights from algorithm studies, research is also relevant for existing political questions regarding platform workers’ labour market status and the functio...

Episteemisen yhteisön teoria korostaa jaettuja metodologisia lähtökohtia ja arvolähtökohtia yhteisöjen koossapitävinä voimina, minkä lisäksi taloustiede on havaittu tutkimuksessa erityisen metodologisesti eristäytyneeksi.

This data is analysed using non-parametric tests.FindingsStudy of this platform shows that the platform functions as a channel of acquisition for self-employed professionals. This lean platform enables matching of information of supply and demand, thereby facilitating processes of acquisition. The number of competitors, distance to a potential job and non-standard proposals are statistically significant factors that influence whether a consumer is interested in a proposal. Effect sizes are very small.Research limitations/implicationsThis platform is a two-way market f...

In the negotiations, the employers' representative and Paperiliitto (the Paper Union) struggled to find a compromise on the issue of outsourcing. The collective bargaining process is analysed with the concept of representativeness. Regarding internal and reputation representativeness Paperiliitto has weakened somewhat, but has remained stable on the dimensions of external and legal representativeness. Paperiliitto has shown its commitment to gender-equality. The current collective agreement shows that Paperiliitto is generally speaking a representative actor, both towards its members and its social partners. [Article copies

Instead, it is rather aspects of transparency in industrial relations and 'the ritual of striking' that have greater explanatory power.

The main research questions in all the articles refer to the changes in the representativeness of the Finnish Paper Workers' Union. Representativeness stands for the entire entity of external, internal, legal and reputational factors that enable the labor union to represent its members and achieve its goals. This concept is based on an extensive reading of quantitative and qualitative industrial relations literature, which includes works based on Marxist labor-capital relations (such as Hyman's industrial relations studies), and more recent union density studies as well as gender- and ethnic diversity-based 'union revitalization' studies. Müller-Jentsch's German studies of industrial relations have been of particular importance as well as Streeck's industrial unionism and technology studies. The concept of representativeness is an attempt to combine the insights of these diverse strands of lit...

This article analyses the Paper Workers' Union's stance on outsourcing, arguing that it has been defending acquired rights and perhaps deliberately narrowed its representation of diverse constituencies over time.

This case study analyses the influence of internal factions on the capability of the Finnish Paper Workers' Union to shift to a strategy of partnership. It is shown that resistance to change was especially strong with longer-serving shop stewards, and the strong division into factions implies limits to the extent of partnership in the Finnish paper industry.
