The leading question is why aspectual composition, which is now an accepted theoretical notion, remained out of reach. Three measuring points are placed in the more general historicalcomparative linguistic theory developed during that period showing changes in the theoretical perspective on the analysis of aspect (and tense) with respect to notions such as continuity, completion, totality, subjective and objective Aktionsart, etc. This prepares for an answer to the question in the title of the paper. Central to finding the answer given here is the relation between linguistics and logic which in the selected period went from close to nil to close, with two totally different forms of logic and two rather different forms of doing linguistics.

One of the factors playing a role is an increase in the importance of the role of cognitive perspective at the cost of the role of ontology, which received a lot of attention in Steedman's chapter. Along this line the present update has also sketched what can be considered a typical linguistic approach to tense, namely a binary approach in terms of tense oppositions carrying indices which determine temporal location. This alternative to Reichenbach ternary tense system, which dates back to the pre-structuralist period appears to give more room to tense as a factor in the cognitive organization of temporal information.

It contains clearly some of the material presented at the course 'Aspectuality and Event Structure' given during the European Summer School on Logic, Language and Information in Barcelona, Spain in August. I would like to thank Mana Kobuchi-Philip, Ralf Naumann, Bill Philip, Yoad Winter, Martijn Spaan and Joost Zwarts for their helpful comments on earlier versions, as well as the participants of the course for their questions and comments. The paper was published as 'Events as Dividuals' in [?]. The paper in chapter 2 was read at the Cortona Conference of Aspect and Tense in Cortona, Italy in October 1993. The paper appeared as 'Indices and Habituality' in [Bertinetto et al.(1995)Bertinetto, Bianchi, Higginbotham, and Squartini]:195-217. The paper in chapter 3 was read in June 1995 at the 5th International at the European Summer School at Essex in August 1992 and at the 4th European Workshop on Time and Space at the Château de Bonas in France in September 1992 organized by Mario Borillo and his staff. It was published as 'Distributivity and Collectivity: A Couple at Odds' in Kanazawa and Piñón 1994:49-80. I would like to thank the participants in the discussions, in particular Jay Atlas, Jaap van der Does, Barry Schein, Anna Szabolcsi, Kees Vermeulen, Co Vet and Frans Zwarts. I also would like to thank Makoto Kanazawa, Chris Piñón and an anonymous reviewer for their editorial comments.

Research paper thumbnail of Textures of Time. The interplay of the perfect, durative adverbs and Extended-Now-adverbs in German and English

In: Glot International Vol 7, No. 7/8, September/October 2003, 204-210., 2003

This thesis is about the German and English Present Perfect in relation to two classes of adverbs... more This thesis is about the German and English Present Perfect in relation to two classes of adverbs. The first class consists of temporal adverbs expressing duration (bis 'until', seit 'since', lang 'for') and has often been argued to be interrelated to the Present Perfect, but as I argue, it is not. The second class contains Extended-Now-adverbs like schon immer 'ever since', i.e. adverbs denoting a time span that starts in the past and reaches up until speech time. This class has never been related to the Perfect before. However, I show that there is a very intimate interrelation. Extended-Now-adverbs make the traditional Reichenbachian Perfect-semantics untenable and suggest strongly that the correct Perfect-semantics is the Extended-Nowtheory. I adopt this theory of the Perfect for both German and English. One important aspect of this thesis is my web-based data collection. My data show that a lot of claims made in the literature do not hold, which has important consequences for linguistic theory. I assume the following meaning rules for the German and English Perfect, respectively:
