The methodology of the paper is qualitative and conceptual. The issues were analysed under various themes. The data were gathered through the secondary method of data collection such as textbooks, journal articles, reports of election observer teams, party constitutions, workshop papers, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) documents, the Electoral Acts and the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The analysis of the information gathered helped to dissect the circumstances that were responsible for the electoral defeat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by the current ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2015 general elections. This is due the antidemocratic actions of the political class This article aims at identifying how actions of the political class act as a backward clog to democratic growth in the country. Crucial among the causative factors is the fact that its political class decelerates the country's democracy by their abysmal display of undemocratic tendencies. They perpetrate these through a several ways which include godfathers, succession crises and abuse of incumbency, electoral malpractices, electoral violence, and political alienation, travesty of justice, recourse to primordial cleavages, corruption and inconsistent policy inconsistency, human rights abuse, to mention but some. This article is qualitative. It argues that there is need to make reform in the Electoral Act and strengthen the anti-corruption crusade in order to check the excesses of the political class and record fundamental gains in Nigeria's democratic experience.

Elections are the major hallmark of a democratic society. This paper argues that elections in Nigeria have not been able to contribute fundamentally to democratic consolidation. Specifically, the paper appraises the 2011 elections and the spate of violent reactions that followed the announcement of the results of the presidential elections despite the views of both domestic and international observers that the elections were credible. It opines that stakeholders must commit themselves to the task of conducting free and fair elections if the Nigerian fledgling democracy to enhance the speed of democratic consolidation.

It is a conceptual and qualitative study which employed primary and secondary data collection procedures. The data were analysed thematically. The study contends that since Nigeria's return to democratic rule on May 29, 1999, political parties have not been able to contribute meaningfully to democratic consolidation. Using two leading Fourth Republic political parties, the People Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) as case studies, the study posits that the inability of the parties to make a positive impact in consolidating the country's democracy is informed by their level of institutionalization which have been undermined by the dearth of internal party democracy. This has manifested in the dysfunctional ways in which they evolve, their inherent lack of unity and focus, involvement in ele...

It asserts that there is widespread poverty in Nigeria despite its great endowments. The paper notes that successive regimes in Nigeria have been introducing different programmes to alleviate poverty. It established a l ink between poverty alleviation programmes (strategies) and governance and blamed the failure of such programmes on absence of good governance. The paper uses secondary data and adopted the elite theory to explain why poverty alleviation programmes fail in Nigeria bearing in m ind some of the past programmes. Viable recommendations are made in the paper to ensure the success of future programmes of government.

The methodology adopted is descriptive and content analysis. The paper posits that the absence of democratic stability in Nigeria especially since th e enthronement of democratic governance on May 29, 1999 is due largely to lack of effective citizenshi p education in the country. The import of the paper is that effective citizenship education in Nigeria is the panacea to Democratic Stability in the country and recommends how this could be realized.

The functions of political parties are central to the operations of democracy. Some of the functions are interest articulation and aggregation, facilitating popular participation through elections, citizenship education, representation and political recruitment, opposition etc (Duverger 1954, Downs, 1957; Disraeli, 2009). Nigerian political parties have been confronted by many challenges due to their level of internal democracy, which weakens their expected roles in democratic politics. In Nigeria, an overwhelming clamour for the enforcement of the doctrines of internal democracy exists among the political parties. This is especially with respect to the way and manner primary elections are being conducted. This results in electoral malpractices at the general elections. There is much evidence that many Nigerians are of the view that internal democracy boosts the integrity of elections and adva...

Data were gathered from secondary sources and the information gathered were analysed under various themes. The paper contends that Nigeria's Fourth Republic political parties are not adequately internally democratic and this negates their inclination to become institutionalised and also circumscribe them from performing their democratic roles. Internal party democracy in parties inclines them towards institutionalisation and to perform their democratic roles effectively. If internal democracy is enhanced in Nigeria, political parties will be more relevant to the democratic process. It is recommended that all political parties should strive to promote internal democratic activities.
