During the evaluation, conducted from May to June 2008, measurements were made and recorded regarding the size and infection rates of the snail, pH and water temperature and vertebrate infection rates. Snails and bovine feces samples were collected at random in all municipalities of Santiago Island, except Tarrafal, properly packed, and sent to the Laboratory of National Institute of Agricultural Research and Development (INIDA) where they were analyzed. The results showed positive results for stool examinations of cattle and the presence of an intermediate host (Lymnaea natalensis) in all localities visited. A positive correlation was also found between the vertebrate and invertebrate infection rate, with the highest rate recorded in Santa Cruz (72.72%) and the lowest in Praia (16.66%). The average infection rate observed for the snails and cattle was 51.51% and ...

The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in domestic cats and dogs in different metropolitan regions of Panama. A total of 576 samples were collected; sera from 120 cats and 456 dogs were tested using a commercial indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The overall seroprevalence of IgG antibodies was 30.73%. There is high seroprevalence of T. gondii in cats and dogs in the metropolitan regions around the Panama Canal; however, differences between these species were not significant. Statistical analysis indicated that there are relevant variables, such as the age of animals, with a direct positive relationship with seroprevalence. None of the variables related to animal welfare (veterinary attention provided, type of dwelling, and access to green areas and drinking water) were associated with seropositivity.

As causes of luxation, severe trauma, ilium fractures, violent overextension and patellar fixation, have been described. A case of a Shetland pony is described, referred to the Complejo Hospitalario Veterinario de Corozal-Universidad de Panamá, which had a 4/5 lameness of the left hind limb and muscle atrophy of the biceps femoris and gluteus. It was decided to perform a simple digital radiography of the pelvis, and a coxofemoral joint luxation was observed. Once made the diagnosis, it was decided to perform surgical treatment, in terms of an ostectomy and excision of the femoral head. The prognosis is reserved in these lesions, but in our case, monitoring was carried out for 5 months, where less muscle atrophy was observed, but still remained 2/5 degree lameness.

However, there are potential complications after this procedure. A case of a 6 year old Quarter Horse and 480 kg is described, referred to the Complejo Hospitalario Veterinario de Corozal-Universidad de Panamá, which had a 4/5 lameness of the right forelimb. In the clinic history, a bilateral palmar digital neurectomy about 4 months ago was performedby the referring veterinarian because of chronic foot pain. A simple digital radiography and ultrasound of the pastern and fetlock areas were performed, and some findings related to rare complications of this surgical technique were diagnosed.

Since the emergence of CHOV in early 2000, we have systematically sampled and archived rodents from >150 sites across Panama to establish a baseline understanding of the host and virus, producing a permanent archive of holistic specimens that we are now probing in greater detail. We summarize these collections and explore preliminary habitat/virus associations to guide future wildlife surveillance and public health efforts related to CHOV and other zoonotic pathogens. Host sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene form a single monophyletic clade in Panama, despite wide distribution across Panama. Seropositive samples were concentrated in the central region of western Panama, consistent with the ecology of this agricultural commensal and the higher incidence of CHOV ...

The prevalence and clinical forms of Trypanosoma cruzi were evaluated among blood donor candidate... more The prevalence and clinical forms of Trypanosoma cruzi were evaluated among blood donor candidates attended at a general hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from January 1997 to April 1999. The investigation was done by means of the indirect hemagglutination test and was confirmed via ELISA. Data were collected from clinical examinations, conventional electrocardiogram, chest radiography and echocar-diography. The results showed that despite Trypanosoma cruzi prevalence of 1.17% (128 patients), mainly in males aged 40 years or over, 70.8% of these patients, mainly males aged 19 to 39 years, demonstrated abnormalities that allowed the diagnosis of cardiopathy and/or esophagopathy. This once again corroborates the importance of Trypanosoma cruzi infection in urban centers.
