This study presents the analysis of a corpus of 12 telecollaborative interactions, recorded on vi... more This study presents the analysis of a corpus of 12 telecollaborative interactions, recorded on video, between British and Spanish secondary education students during a telecollaborative project funded by the European Commission. The main aim is to analyse negotiation of meaning in these telecollaboration exchanges which are perceived in the literature as a sign of meaningful interaction. It is essential to study instances of telecollaboration in order to identify the possible affordances in the acquisition of communicative and intercultural competences. Smith's (2005) Model of Computer-Mediated Negotiated Interaction based on Varonis and Gass (1985) is employed to analyse the video interactions between Spanish and English students to find how learners deal with linguistic mistakes or any other type of communication problem during synchronous peer interaction. The results show that students employ a wide variety of strategies to negotiate meaning, while avoiding overt correction unless it is absolutely necessary to avoid communication breaking down. Skilful use of corrective techniques and resolving communication problems was also observed. These strategies led to fluid interactions and efficient task completion. Students were seen to readily take the initiative when tackling negotiation of meaning and correction and were provided scaffolding, a task that is normally carried out by teachers in more traditional settings.

Virtual Exchange for Intercultural Language Learning and Teaching

Virtual Exchange for Intercultural Language Learning and Teaching Fostering Communication for the... more Virtual Exchange for Intercultural Language Learning and Teaching Fostering Communication for the Digital Age This Book illustrates new virtual intercultural practices for language learning from primary to tertiary education and highlights the transversality of these practices throughout the language curriculum. The current English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) perspective sets the framework as a possible vector of cultural exchanges in a variety of contexts, and from which the different authors coming from Europe and all over the world present their studies. The book deploys diverse educational exchanges within a wide range of technological tools and with varied approaches to the intercultural dimension in language learning. Through these virtual exchanges, different languages and educational cultures come together to create emerging communities of practice co-constructed for the limited time-space of the collaborative projects. This volume opens a dialogue with researchers from different backgrounds and theoretical and methodological perspectives as technology can no longer be apprehended without its purposeful human and semiotic meanings and conversely, human and semiotic meanings can no longer be apprehended without Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Going beyond strict polarised views on the technology or humanistic approaches, this book presents a more nuanced, interrelated stance and will appeal to researchers, scholars, post graduate students and teachers in applied linguistics, language learning and teaching, education, information studies, cultural studies and intercultural communication. This paper examines how some of these changes influence the way in which languages in general, and English in particular, are taught nowadays. We show how we have applied an Innovation in Education Project methodology in some modules in the degree in English Studies. Our most important instrument is our E-Learning platform (Aula Virtual) which offers us numerous ways in which to bridge the gap between our students and the team of teachers and permits our students to learn through a more interactive type of methodology.El siglo XXI está y estará marcado por una serie de cambios a todos los niveles y en especial en el terreno de la innovación tecnológica. The Galois Sub-hierarchy (GSH) is a polynomial-size representation of a concept lattice which has... more The Galois Sub-hierarchy (GSH) is a polynomial-size representation of a concept lattice which has been applied to several fields, such as software engineering and linguistics. In this paper, we analyze the performances, in terms of computation time, of three GSH-building algorithms with very different algorithmic strategies: Ares, Ceres and Pluton. We use Java and C++ as implementation languages and Galicia as our development platform. Our results show that implementations in C++ are significantly faster, and that in most cases Pluton is the best algorithm.

In recent years, telecollaboration has proved to be a useful tool in the acquisition of foreign l... more In recent years, telecollaboration has proved to be a useful tool in the acquisition of foreign languages and intercultural communicative skills (Belz 2003b; Clavel-Arroitia, Pennock-Speck 2015a, 2015b; Hewitt, Brett 2007; O’Dowd 2007; Su et al ., 2005). This paper focuses on how prepared secondary-school teachers believe they are in order to successfully implement telecollaboration in the classroom. To gather information on their views we carried out an online survey of 179 secondary school foreign language teachers and a series of focus group interviews in the context of a European project, TeCoLa. The advantage of the double- pronged approach to data collection, quantitative and qualitative, is that it provides us with a more complete picture of teachers’ needs.
