Abstract
Keywords Gender-based Violence Multimodal Discourse Critical Discourse Analysis Song
In this paper, we study El Huecco's song " Se acabaron las lágrimas " (The tears are over) with a double objective. On the one hand, we intend to understand how songs, and other cultural manifestations, can be used as a response to given social problems, such as gender-based violence. On the other hand, we intend to identify the discourse strategies which are used in this song to oppose domestic violence, and also to see how these discourse strategies are helpful to establish an emphatic relationship with the audience. To do so, we adopt a multimodal approach which understands the song as a unitary discourse made of different communicative modes (lyrics, music and image, at least in this case). We combine that multimodal approach with Critical Discourse Analysis with the objective of explaining how the identified discourse strategies are used to oppose commonly-held beliefs about the role that women, and men, have in society.

I hypothesise that the multimodal nature of songs makes them more effective in spreading this message. To prove this, a cognitive approach to discourse studies will be followed. By relying on the postulates of Text-World Theory and Discourse Space Theory, not only the reality that is textually constructed in the songs can be uncovered, but also the ideological relation between the singer, the audience and that reality. The meaning potential of the lyrics is widened if we consider songs as a multimodal blend. Thus, the analysis will also incorporate tools aimed at uncovering the meaning potential of music and images. The analysis will prove that it is this combination of semiotic resources that renders the songs communicatively effective, thus turning these into an important socio-political practice in the fight against domestic violence.

It could be argued that the 1998 Good Friday (Belfast) Agreement creates a paradoxical reality in Northern Ireland because its language is so vague that it can be interpreted in different ways. This paper analyses linguistic categories used in the text of the Agreement to reveal the type of peaceful reality promoted and the constructive ambiguity used to facilitate agreement. It argues that the success of the peace process depended to a large extent on the particular nuances of discourse in and around this crucial document.

By doing a qualitative study of newspapers, this article aims to identify which discourse strategies are used when informing about the actions and decisions taken in European political and economic fora. The analysis identifies the three main generic frames which are used in news pieces: morality (mostly as a call for solidarity), economic (mostly as preventing possible harm), and conflict (focused on divide(s) within (EU)rope). The activation of these frames in the news pieces contribute to an implicit legitimation of the existence of (EU)rope as based on two core values – solidarity and cooperation – together with a delegitimation of the actions performed by some European institutions.

Political discourse can be effective by means of carefully chosen linguistic elements (pronouns, lexical referents, metaphors). If successfully constructed, the discourse can live on for many years, as we see in the Northern Irish Agreement of 1998 that is still resounding in current debates. Its ambiguity and vagueness allowed for different interpretations, in such a way that the support, or rejection, of the agreement could be legitimised, depending on the ideological beliefs of the community. All three have been criticized in the media by using war rhetoric. Thus, the chapter seeks to shed light on how the activation of the war/conflict frames interacts with force dynamics in the early conceptualizations of the virus, and how these may also eventually justify polarized views of society. For this aim, the statements given by the three politicians in the month of March have been qualitatively analysed. This qualitative analysis has departed from corpus identification of concordances and has also been combined with the identification of instances of militarizing metaphors. The analysis shows how the three politicians originally rely on a basic opposition between society and the virus. However, intertextual appeals to former historical conflicts are also activated, thus allowing for a construal of the metaphorical war against the virus as being similar to others where enemies were “visible.”

The corpus of the analysis will be a selection of 12 broadcasted TV advertisements, which we believe are representative not only of political but also of advertising communication. We suspect that in political discourse pronoun selection is frequently determined because of the pragmatic values the chosen pronouns may promote. Therefore, we hypothesise that through pronominal choice political parties can show their solidarity - or distance - with certain political identities, mainly by relying on the political opposition between "us" and "them". Moreover, pronoun selection seems to be a useful persuasive device because of the affective framework that deictics - and more specifically pronouns - can establish between both the speaker and the addressee.

In order to do so, we depart from a broad understanding of political discourse. So as to understand how beliefs, actions and the IRA existence are legitimised in those statements, Text-World Theory is combined with critical discourse analysis approaches. We have used the protocol to annotate four 100,000-word corpora in English: opinion articles (The Guardian and The Times), science popularization in the press (The Guardian and The Times), political discourse (speeches delivered by British politicians) and fora on social issues (REDDIT). The development of the protocol has gone through two main stages. The first stage has consisted in a preliminary theoretical definition of the model of evaluative stance and its main categories, drawing from research on stance, evaluation and critical discourse analysis, together with methods for the identification of metaphoricity (du Bois 2007, Martin and White 2005, Pragglejazz 2007, van Leeuwen 2008, Wodak and Meyer 2015, among others). The preliminary model was tested in samples of the corpora and subsequently, the protocol underwent a first initial refinement and revision. The second stage has consisted in a process of establishing a good degree of inter-rater reliability for the full annotation of the corpora. The procedure of inter-rater reliability was carried out by three researchers (Hidalgo-Downing, Pérez-Sobrino, and Williams-Camus) who individually annotated samples from the corpora in four subsequent rounds. A joint discussion followed each round to discuss conflicting annotations and to refine the protocol for the ensuing round. The goal of these series of annotations was to know whether there was any variation in the inter-rater reliability with which evaluative stance was identified across researchers, rounds and genres. The results of the inter-rater reliability tests show a consistent increase in the kappa scores for the value category (positive vs negative evaluation) and, to a lesser extent, for metaphoricity (although, in both cases, kappa scores showed moderate to high agreement). These rounds were complemented with two rounds of annotation of sample texts by the full team (all seven researchers participating in this project) in order to ensure the understanding and uniform application of the criteria of the protocol for the annotation of the whole corpora.</p>

CADAAD [Critical Approaches to Discourse Analysis Across Disciplines
Recent years have seen an upsurge of different approaches to discourse analysis, which could be d... more Recent years have seen an upsurge of different approaches to discourse analysis, which could be described as ranging from traditional discourse studies (mainly based on philosophical and sociological theories) to pure discourse analysis grounded in linguistic analysis. Although quite different at first sight, it can be argued that all these models share some common ground, which can be explained by establishing relations between the perspective of political discourse addressed in each model (Cf. Chilton & Schäffner 2002), the CDA stage that is most prominent (Cf. Fairclough 1989), and the communicative meta-function at the core of the analysis (Cf. Halliday & Matthiessen 2004). After presenting an overview of some of the most common approaches to the study of political discourse (based on Boyd & Filardo, forthcoming), in this paper we present our own proposal for a comprehensive approach to Political Discourse Analysis (PDA). The model, already drafted in Boyd & Filardo (forthcoming), envisions a three-tiered approach to PDA which considers (1) text-related features; (2) representation and (3) interaction. We argue that such a model is better suited to today's highly wired new media ecology in which text receivers play an increasingly important role in the dissemination process of (political) text and genre. Through the use of online features users react to and interact with political texts and the various genres they becoming a powerful force in reshaping linguistic and social practice.
