historical treasure of great value that was the object of the
present lecture by two Dutch scholars at the Palace of the
Archbishop in Granada, on Tuesday March 19, at 19.00 hours.
The treasure we are speaking of consists of Arabic texts on a
sheet of parchment and on numerous small tablets of lead,
which were discovered in Granada, at the end of the 16th
century, in the tower of the old Friday Mosque and in caves
of the “Valparaíso” hill, which henceforth became called
“Sacromonte”. These Arabic texts are among the very last
literary productions of the Granadan Moriscos, who were of
Andalusi Muslim origin and who continued to live in Spain,
often attached to their ancient Islamic faith in secret. With
the permission of the Archbishop of Granada, the Dutch
scholars, who are specialized in the History of Religions in
general, and especially in the history of Islam, including the
religious history of Muslims living in as minorities in
Christian Spain, are preparing a study, edition and
translation of these sources, which have been the object of
heated discussions in the 17th century and which have
regained international academic interest in the present time.
Professors Van Koningsveld (Emeritus Professor of Islamic
Studies at Leiden University) and Wiegers (Professor of
Comparative Religious Studies at the University of
Amsterdam), present herewith a report of their research
project and shed new light on the religious messages of these
enigmatic texts.

Together with the Lead Books, discovered in various caves in the outskirts of Granada in the years 1595-1600, the parchment stood at the beginning of an important national cult. After being transferred to the Vatican at the beginning of the seventeenth century and following their anathematization in 1682 the parchment and the Lead Books were kept in Rome until the year 2000 when they were returned to the Archbishopry of Granada. The article presents an analysis of the layout and script of the parchment (2) followed by a survey of translations and transcripts by early (Christian and Muslim) eyewitnesses (3.1). The data of these early eyewitnesses are critically compared with the main elements of the parchment (3.2) Then follows a discussion of the palaeographic comments made by a few (Christian and Muslim) eyewitnesses (4). In the final conclusions, the authors argue that the document under discussion is indeed the original parchment as found in 1588 notwithstanding the incomprehensibility of its Arabic texts and the many inconsistencies and corruptions of its Spanish and Latin texts (5.1). According to the authors, there is no evidence for the interpretation of the parchment as a proto-Islamic document, as we are dealing here with a Roman Catholic message heralding the destruction of Islam. At the same time, however, the document also contained a symbolic message, viz. in stipulating that the first-century Granadan Christians, including the well-known figure of Cecilius, wrote Arabic and Spanish, just as many Moriscos did. In other words: even though Islam had to be extirpated, Arabic as a language could harmoniously accompany a genuine Christian life.

Research paper thumbnail of ‘The missing link between religious education and the study of religions. Reflections on the role of the study of religions in secondary education’

This article shows that the role of the Study of Religions (i. e. Religions-wissenschaft, Science... more This article shows that the role of the Study of Religions (i. e. Religions-wissenschaft, Sciences des Religions, the Science of Religions) in secondary education is increasingly the subject ofstudyby individual scholars ofreligions as well as by national and international associations for the Study of Religions. I argue that this interest is a corollary of social and cultural transformation processes such as pluralisation, secularisa-tion, and globalisation on the one hand, and of developments within the field of theology and the Study of Religions, in particular the coming into being of the latter as a separate discipline on a global scale, on the other. At the same time, next to scholars of religions and against the background of the same processes, educationalists have sought to broaden traditional religious education, in the form of the 'learning religion model, and give the Study of Religions a place in the secondary school curriculum, This article offers a reflection about the results of both pedagogica-l efforts and efforts ofscholars ofreligions to concep-tualise the role of the Study of Religions in secondary education in the context of Dutch society and beyond.
