The city centre of Amsterdam is transforming to a more attractive place for pedestrians and cycli... more The city centre of Amsterdam is transforming to a more attractive place for pedestrians and cyclists, by creating more space for these slow modalities. Entrepreneurs see their profits growing, since an attractive city centre attracts more customers for their commercial facilities. However, the shops need to be supplied as well. With more space given to the slow modalities, the urban logistics sector has less space to deliver goods. On the other side the logistics movements have many negative effects on the walkability in cities too. This can be marked as a paradox, where entrepreneurs on one side profit from the more attractive city centre, while on the other side they have problems with supplying their shops and catering facilities. In practice urban logistics and walkability are conflicting with each other. In Amsterdam this is a current issue, where the pressure on the city centre is much discussed. This research takes the view of the pedestrian and analyses the pressure of urban logistics on the city centre. By looking at the Haarlemmerstraat/Haarlemmerdijk it became clear that the urban logistics are affecting the shopping area in such a negative way that the walkability in the street is under pressure. This is not striking, because with 30.000 cyclists, and a few thousand pedestrians a day the street is already crowded. Taking in mind that the high commercial density and high commercial diversity of the approximately 250 commercial facilities leads to 200-300 logistics movements a day the problem is even getting worse. Nevertheless a reduction between 10% and 20% of logistics movements is possible by implementing potential solutions. This will solve part of the problems in the Haarlemmerstraat/Haarlemmerdijk and enlarge the walkability in the area. However more research is needed to get a better insight in the whole logistics process. Also the stakeholders should cooperate more to reach this goal and the gap between the policymakers and the real life situation should be bridged.
