This presentation summarizes results from experiments conducted during an undergraduate research ... more This presentation summarizes results from experiments conducted during an undergraduate research junior seminar class on path finding problems. One major objective was to get students acquainted with Artificial Intelligence issues and introduce tool sets for preparing them to more advanced concepts. In order to foster students 'high-levels of engagement and motivation in this field, path finding problems are introduced in classical problems introduced in basic game environment. Path finding techniques can be introduced in an incremental fashion by scaffolding student's problem-solving processes with visualizing tools for evaluating solutions. Three classical path finding algorithms were tested on ten scenarios. The students are able to quickly grasp basic concepts of optimality, heuristics and admissibility by examining how solutions are built by each algorithm and by comparing the number of nodes explored.

However, a clear understanding of the underlying architecture is critical to achieve the anticipated speed up of serial programs. To this end, analyzing performance metrics is essential for tuning parallel implementations and determining what improvement can be expected by scaling out or increasing the number of processes [1-4]. Without considering important aspects such locality, load balancing and communication overheads associated with each available parallel system, students are having a hard time obtaining the intended performance and determining which approach is suitable to solving the problem at hand. Ahstruct - In this study a fuzzy logic controller has been designed in order to deal with the unc... more Ahstruct - In this study a fuzzy logic controller has been designed in order to deal with the uncertainty and ambiguity of the information the system receives. The technique has been used on a mobile robot using a set of seven ultrasonic sensors to pcrceive the environment. The fuzzy control designed maps the input space (information coming from ultrasonic sensors) to a safe collision avoidance trajectory (output space). This is accomplished by an inference process based on rules (list of IF-THEN statements) taken from a knowledge base. The technique generates satisfactory movements of the autonomous vehicle to reach its goal safely. Simulation and experimental results show that the method can be satisfactory used by mobile robots moving on unknown static terrains.
