Empowering educators and learners, visualizations make data graphically accessible through a range of perceptual modes. As the embodiment of learners' data, visualizations give them a thing to reflect upon, potentially arriving at insights they may otherwise not have. Visualizations aid educators in behavioral monitoring, formative feedback provision, and strategic intervention. They support learners' motivation and self-regulation, focusing attention on the behaviors associated with academic success. As a mechanism for joint knowledge work, visualizations are collaboratively used to produce, translate, and facilitate communication around shared learning artifacts. This visualization survey explores disposition, predictive, semantic, discourse, collaborative and social learning analytics tools within a variety of learning spaces. In their entirety, th...

Mum, thank you for your unceasing belief in my ability to succeed, and for imbuing me with a deep respect for the many opportunities that education may provide. Your lifemodeling a woman with equal parts ingenuity and kindness, grit and empathy, strength and intelligencemade everything I do and have done possible. You taught me how to work and how to hold hope, both incredibly important abilities when undertaking an endeavour of this magnitude. I am grateful for you and your endless demonstrations of love. I hope to continue your legacy for the rest of my days. Ifetayo Zarine, my golden child, you are my inspiration and my light, and I love you with my whole heart. I believe that children choose their parentsyou timed your entry into this world to be present for every one of my degrees. You contributed to this work; doing this with you by my side every step of the way was precious, as it reinforced who I am holding hope for. I want you to have the tools to be able to create opportunities for yourself, to never be afraid to take chances because you are solid in your belief in your many abilities. With this, my final degree, I pass the torch on to you. As you make your way in the world, I hope you never lose your curiosity. Your vision is uniquely yours; I hope you never stop questioning, dreaming, or making. You will always have my love and support; it is an honour to be your mother. Krusheska, you joined this PhD journey at the most difficult point. Thank you for making me and this work a priority in your life from day one. You put in more hours with me at the library than many who worked there, and your intellectual contributions helped me translate my handwaving to text, with a very fancy pen to boot! You held it down at home while everything in our lives drastically changed, supporting me through one of the most challenging years of my life. Simply put, you are the ride or die of my dreams. I look forward to many more adventures with, and time to enjoy the fruit of our labour.

Internal conditions such as goal orientation and numeracy were measured alongside the external conditions created by the discussion structure and learning analytics. Our results emphasize key factors that should be considered when designing learning analytics tools.

BY BRAN KNOWLES, ALISON SMITH-RENNER, FOROUGH POURSABZI-SANGDEH, DI LU, AND HALIMAT ALABI key insights ˽ Unlike popular use scenarios involving today's consumers, more ambitious future use of health wearable data can be expected to involve even less tolerance for data uncertainty. ˽ Here, we explore the effect of uncertainty on several forward-looking scenarios in which health-wearable data is used to guide critical health decision making. ˽ Areas in need of further research include how to provide users access to confirmatory evidence of reliability, preserve provenance of uncertainties, and tailor communication about uncertainties to users.

This was the second annual VAHC workshop and it was held in late October in conjunction with the IEEE VisWeek Conference. The primary goal of the VAHC workshop is to bring together researchers and clinicians to discuss the areas in healthcare that can benefit the most from advances in visualization and analytic systems. This review summarizes the event and provides information on how to access the electronic proceedings. In addition, we seek volunteers who are interested in helping to organize future VAHC workshops.
