Multiannual changes of structure and biomass of crustacean zooplankton were studied in the shallo... more Multiannual changes of structure and biomass of crustacean zooplankton were studied in the shallow, lowland, polyhumic Siemianówka Reservoir on the upper Narew River in northeast Poland. High ammonium and soluble reactive phosphorus ion availability for phytoplankton, low water transparency, and high dissolved oxygen concentration resulted in water humoeutrophication and caused an intensive development of summer cyanobacteria. We compiled and analyzed long-term (1993-2011) crustacean zooplankton community data and chlorophyll a concentrations. Zooplankton biomass and structure in the summer were related to the intensity of the cyanoprokaryota blooms. As chlorophyll a concentration increased, crustacean zooplankton biomass decreased and smaller crustacean species dominated the zooplankton structure. Large species of crustaceans (Daphnia longispina, D. magna, and Eudiaptomus graciloides) disappeared from the reservoir after filamentous cyanobacteria dominated the phytoplankton. Long-term studies suggest that phytoplankton with strong dominance of filamentous cyanobacteria shape the crustacean community but are probably an insignificant food source for the crustacean zooplankton in the Siemianówka Reservoir.

This study describes changes in the trophic status of 12 lakes within Suwałki Landscape Park (SLP... more This study describes changes in the trophic status of 12 lakes within Suwałki Landscape Park (SLP). All of the trophic classifications of the lakes were based on the trophic continuum division. Trophic status was determined by means of multiparameter indices using several diverse criteria. In this study, the assessment of the trophic status of lakes included water quality; abundance and biomass of bacterioplankton, phytoplankton, and zooplankton; and primary production of phytoplankton. The Carlson trophic state index (TSI) describes the level of water fertility and indicated the dominance of moderately eutrophic waters. Lakes Perty, Jeglówek, and Hańcza have a trophic status that indicates mesotrophy (TSI <50). The trophic status of the studied lakes was determined based on the bacterial abundance and clearly showed a lack of oligotrophic lakes in SLP. Based on the number of bacteria, only Lake Szurpiły can be classified as β-mesotrophic, whereas Lake Linówek can be characterized as hypertrophic with some features typical for humic waters. The greatest value of gross primary production was observed in Lake Linówek (126.4 mg C/m 3 /h). The phytoplankton trophy index varied from 1.59 to 2.28, and its highest value, which indicated eutrophy, was determined for Lake Udziejek. In the case of Lakes Hańcza, Szurpiły, Perty, Jeglówek, and Kojle, the index ranged from 1.25 to 1.74, which indicated mesotrophy. The majority of the lakes were classified as mesoeutrophic (1.75-2.24). The highest trophic status was assessed for lakes with a marked dominance of cyanobacteria (Lake Przechodnie, Lake Krajwelek, Lake Udziejek, and Lake Pogorzałek), which is commonly recognized as an indicator of high trophic status. Considering all of the indices of trophic status, the analysis of rotifer community structure indicates that the studied group of lakes is mesoeutrophic or eutrophic. The values of crustacean zooplankton indices indicated that the trophic status of the studied lakes was close to that determined using a TSI. The parameters of zooplankton abundance and species structure allowed for the observance of changes in the tropic levels of lakes, which are difficult to detect by a chemical assay alone.

An aim of the research was to test a hypothesis that impact of a shallow hypertrophic reservoir o... more An aim of the research was to test a hypothesis that impact of a shallow hypertrophic reservoir on riverine zooplankton is limited to a short section of the outflowing river because of a rapid conversion of the lentic habitat into the lotic one. The second hypothesis assumed that species richness of zooplankton is increasing along the river due to washing out littoral and benthic species. The study was carried out in the years 2009-2010, during summer-autumn strong dominance of toxic filamentous Cyanobacteria in a shallow hypertrophic humic Siemianówka Dam Reservoir (northeast Poland) and the outflowing Narew River. During research samples were collected on three consecutive days because water requires approximately as much time to cover the distance from the dam down to 118 km of the river. The article assesses the ecological status of shallow Gorbacz Lake (NE Poland) in the last stage ... more The article assesses the ecological status of shallow Gorbacz Lake (NE Poland) in the last stage before complete drying up. For last few years hydrological regime of the lake catchment has been changed dramatically which was caused by functioning nearby peat mine and longer autumn drought periods for following years. Progressing macrophytes succession leaded complete emergent macrophytes overgrowth of the lake beginning from 2000. The analyses include records of previous samples and data for morphology, water quality, phytoplankton, zooplankton and macrophytes. The trophic status of Gorbacz Lake was verified compare to the previous studies. The results indicate that even with minimum amount of water Gorbacz Lake itself still keeps its dystrophic character with increasing of water color and of DOC, biogenic substances, chlorophyll a concentrations. Humic State Index (HSI) and hydrochemical dystrophy index (HDI) confirm the dystrophic status of the lake with values 71.3 and 76.2 respectively. Both typical phytoplankton representatives of eutrophic and dystrophic waters were recorded. The spatial differentiation of the physico-chemical parameters (Kd PAR , pH, DOC, nutrient concen... more The spatial differentiation of the physico-chemical parameters (Kd PAR , pH, DOC, nutrient concentrations) and plankton communities (phytoplankton, Crustacea) was considered in the system: the water column without macrophytes, pleustophytes -lemnids (duckweeds) and hornwort Ceratophyllum demersum. It was demonstrated that at the study sites different habitat conditions occurred, which were related to the macrophyte assemblages. The highest values of the phytoplankton biomass and the greatest algal biodiversity were found in the site without vegetation, in both species-specific and functional terms. Zooplankton, dominated by Copepoda, reached the greatest density and species diversity at the Ceratophyllum site. Despite the substantial differentiation of habitats, the plankton diversity was quite low.
