Data are being coded; they become en-coded. However, qualitative researchers also use the term "coding data" when they describe processes in which they generate codes with, or from data. I think this is confusing. The term "coding data" characterizes one end on a continuum of coding practices: coding as sorting. When we describe how we build or reconstruct systems of meaning by analyzing data it may make more sense to say that we're "data-ing codes".

In this essay, I discuss how this misunderstanding connects to the technical ease of coding in software; to wide-spread anxiety concerning doing methodologically driven analysis; and to common contexts in which software use is taught.

There is a series of add-ons and programs which allow you to record phone conversations as well as conversations with other Skype users. You’ll find a commented list of Skype recorders here.
This guide will introduce you to the free “Mp3 Skype Recorder”, which – as the name suggests – saves your conversations as mp3 files. If you want to try out different programs: The guys from audiotranskription.de have created two excellent German video tutorials on using two other recorders, “wiretap” & “callgraph”. The tutorials are available here.

The idea behind this curriculum is to facilitate the meaningful, critical, and task-centered integration of qualitative data analysis software into methodology teaching. This approach is grounded in Carvajal’s (2002) critique of issues connected to qualitative data analysis software teaching, and it aligns with di Gregorios (2014) call for “a new pedagogic approach to teaching CAQDAS”.

I show how players on German-speaking non-RPG servers blend gender by using linguistic markers of gender (like specific articles and suffixes) in an interchangeable way. Subsequent to this analysis, possible consequences for the online world as an opposition to ‘offline reality’ and as a space for negotiation of gender identity are discussed. Focusing on different modes of communication while playing, I develop a more differentiated view on communication, sex and gender in online communities – a view that goes beyond an assumption of simplistic, one-dimensional gender bending.

I scrutinize how the program was integrated into the researchers' workflows and how they felt using the computer for a substantial amount of time during their research. In particular, I draw attention to the interviewees' issues concerning time management, data management, teamwork and data perception. I describe how the researchers perceive and communicate their own computer literacy; I show how they embed the use of CAQDAS into their career history as a natural consequence of their affinity towards computers and out of professional necessity.
What were the concrete reasons for using QDA-software? My analysis shows that the demands of academic discourse - foremost time constraints and the need for professional legitimization - triggered and shaped the use of QDA-Software. The interviewees tended to stick to the program to which they were first introduced and used the software with limited experimentation or exploration. Interestingly, the users who presented themselves as more computer literate did not explore different ways to implement the software more extensively. In fact, my interviews suggest that workshops and literature on software can determine which features of the software are used and which workflows are applied by researchers.
Benefits and pitfalls of QDA-software have been ferociously discussed in the past years with the focus set on the impact of the new technology on qualitative research. Being "pro-software" or "con-software" became a matter of being "pro-technology" or "con-technology" in general and therefore led to techno-ideological arguments. Social and professional influences on software usage, on the other hand, were only sparsely discussed.
My findings suggest that research and self-reflection on QDA-software should not focus solely on the question of how QDA-software (or a certain software package) might shape academic research. Another question must be raised: how do the necessities of academic research shape the use of QDA-software? This shifts the focus onto the social structures and the forces behind academic research practices. Consequently, future research on academic software use promises valuable insights into research in practice in general.
