Research paper thumbnail of Gis Multitemporal Analysis of Remote Sensing Images to Assess the Silting of Anthropogenic Dam Lakes in the Outer Subcarpathian Area. Case Study: Pucioasa Accumulation Lake, Romania

The purpose of building these anthropogenic dam lakes is complex, given that extreme hydrological phenomena occurred in late spring and early summer, caused by a significant rainwater supply (about 70%), the difference being made up by the underground supply. Such a hydrotechnical setup was made in the Subcarpathian areas, on large rivers, to mitigate flood waves, but also to create water resources to supply local communities. The main problem facing these lakes is the massive silting due on the one hand to the geological and geomorphological characteristics of the Subcarpathians and, on the other hand, to the high degree of anthropization. The Subcarpathians are, from a geological point of view, made up of friable deposits (marls, clays, marl-clays, gypsums, conglomerates), which trigger a series of geomorphol...

The present study aims to describe certain practical methods of study for the vegetation (of a Subcarpathian area, Vulcana-Băi Commune), which has as structural and functional subunits the phytocenoses specific of a Subcarpathian depression. In the outdoor applications, we have been able to observe the structure of the vegetal layer both vertically and horizontally, by employing the phytogeographic sheet and the vegetation pyramid (through which it was possible to establish the abundance, dominance by species and dominance by stratum), in order to appreciate the architectural model, but also in order to highlight the vegetation as a factor of stability in the development of the present modelling processes.

Our study refers to the environmental impact of the closure of the urban Titu- Dâmboviţa solid waste dump, and comprises: quality of the environmental factors, analysis of the size of the impact, evaluation of the potential impact on the environmental factors, evaluation of the global impact and post-closure monitoring of the waste dump. The results obtained concerning the value of the global pollution index and the bonitation grades for each environmental factor have led us to state that through the closure of this solid domestic waste dump, environment is affected within allowable limits, the impact is low and local, and the effects of this project on the environmental factors are positive.

This analysis was made based on the data recorded at the weather station of Târgovişte (located at 228 m altitude, 44 0 56' N latitude, 25 0 26' E longitude) and at the weather station of Titu (125 m altitude, 45 0 36' latitude N, 26 0 25' longitude E) during the period between 1961 and 2007. The annual, seasonal and monthly values of the Standardized Precipitation Anomaly (SPA) was calculated and interpreted.

In the model used in this study, the environmental quality was assessed at the administrative unit level (county), as a result of the interaction of different components. Fifty indicators were selected and included into 6 major groups based on several factors (natural hazards, air quality, biodiversity, water quality, human health, soil quality, economic activities) that increase the communities' susceptibility to different negative aspects concerning the environment. Each indicator was classified on a scale from 1 to 5 (1-very good…5-very weak). The sum of the indicators was reclassified according to the same model, until the total environmental quality was finally determined. The analysis of the environmental quality on a departmental level provides the opportunity to identify the regions that need to be allotted financial resources in order to diminish the negative impact of the disturbing (anthropic and natural) factors. At the same time, by focusing the research on the most vulnerable counties, a more detailed analysis has revealed the most vulnerable administrative units (towns and communes).

In the Plain of Târgovite, in time, the structure and geographic repartition of the land uses categories have changed, especially in the sense of the increase of the agricultural areas through the valorization of the weakly productive or non-productive areas, the deforestation of certain areas that were once occupied by orchards and vineyards, and also in the sense of the shrinking of certain areas, due to economic transformations generated mainly by the extension of the constructible areas.
