‘No’ Director Pablo Larrain to Helm ‘Scarface’ Reboot (original) (raw)

With David Yates moving on to direct “Tarzan” at Warners, Universal has tapped Pablo Larrain to helm its original take of one its most popular titles, “Scarface.”

Paul Attanasio wrote the current draft of the screenplay.

Marc Shmuger is producing the film under his Global Produce banner. Marty Bregman, producer of the 1983 “Scarface” pic, will also produce.

This film will be a reimagining of the core immigrant story told in both the 1932 and 1983 films. The new film will be set in Los Angeles and explore an immigrant’s rise in the criminal underworld. Sources have previously told Variety that this character will likely be Mexican. The character Al Pacino played in the 1983 version was Cuban.

Executive vice president of production Jon Mone and director of development Jay Polidoro will oversee the pic for the studio.

Larrain directed 2012’s “No,” which was an Academy Award nominee for foreign language film. He is repped by CAA and Management 360.
