The Tribeca Film Festival has pulled together a slate of 72 short films to screen as part of its 2016 festival, with a roster of movies that features recognizable names such as Meryl Streep, Juliette Lewis, Danny DeVito, Natalie Portman, Michael Cera and Zosia Mamet, plus an animated shorts program curated by Whoopi Goldberg.
The festival’s shorts programming opens with “Hard Lovin’ Woman,” Michael Rapaport’s documentary about Lewis’ pursuit of her music career (with a performance by Lewis and her band following the screening), and Matt Pizzano’s “Becoming: Bradley Theodore,” about a self-taught painter.
The overall shorts slate is divided into sections that include “California Dreaming,” which features “Super Sex,” Matthew Modine’s short that stars Ed Asner, Kevin Nealon and Elizabeth Perkins, and “That Dog” with Michael Cera; “New York Now,” which includes Neil LaBute’s latest, “The Mulberry Bush,” and Danny DeVito’s senior-citizen comedy “Curmudgeons” as well as “Mildred and the Dying Parlor” with Mamet, Jane Krakowski and Steve Buscemi; “New York Then,” which includes “Starring Austin Pendleton,” about the influential but little-known actor and featuring the participation of Streep, Portman and Philip Seymour Hoffman; and the animated lineup of eight films curated by Goldberg.
A total of 53 movies in Tribeca’s short film slate are in competition, with 45 of the 72-movie lineup set to make their world premieres at the festival. The 2016 edition of the Tribeca Film Festival runs April 13-24.
