He wasfound in an alley, beaten up, bruised, his ribs shattered. An officer hadordered two men to guard him after the commissioner had told them the mentalityof the abuse.Jim breathed out, opening his gaze again in the dimroom, and turned slowly to look at the rest of it. The bland curtains weren’tpulled in front of the window as they usually were, but it was fine, he coulduse a little view outside, even if it was just another building to thehospital. There was a nice purple and yellow flower bouquet putin a vase on the serve table next to his bed. Jim tried to smile for a bit asmuch as the hurt in his body allowed him to. He hadn’t seen his family for awhile as they had had to leave the city just before his incident but he wassure the others had them informed and they were coming back. The lights were put on and the nurse, Mary, if heremembered right, came to bring him something to eat for lunch. “Good day. Hada good sleep, Jim?”He nodded vaguely and watched as the middle-aged brunetteset up the tray in front of him. She lifted off his oxygen mask and set his bedup accordingly.“Did someone visit me?” He looked towards the flowersand received an odd shake of the head from the nurse. “No, I haven’t seen anyonecome around today.”“What about last night?” Jim had to ask but he wincedfor the pain. Mary looked at him worried and offered him his soup. “Now now, doctor’sorders. Be careful of stressing yourself too much.”Watching his shaky left hand try and hold the soup inthe spoon, Mary helped him eat and soon spoke up again. “I can check up thevisitors list for you, if you’d like.”The commissioner took his set of painkillers Afterfinishing up Jim let out a heavy breath as he settled down under the covers. “I’ll come back in a few hours for the check-up,alright?” Mary stated the lack of activities for the day but she noticed thecute little card tucked between the flowers. “Hey. Maybe it’s your wife. Icould recall her coming here yesterday while you were asleep. I may not besure, so I’ll bring the list when I come back. Okay? Have a good rest.” Before she left, Mary handed Jim the card which hetook with gratitude between his quivering fingers. He pulled on his glassesfrom the table and read the message. I will snap you like a twig He looked up at the door, his heartbeat all of asudden racing through. Jim swallowed hard and felt a cold sweat take over hisbody. His hands that were now stiff were still holding the card with the obscureletters. He tried to get up but the hurt was too immense, evenwith the sedatives. He had no place to go, any better than being guarded withthe few policemen that he could have. He couldn’t get up. It would’ve been absurd to bring in more policemen toprotect him since the streets were flooding with crime that night, he believed, and he rather risked his life than a dozen of innocents. So he waited. Waiting to die, immobile as he was, was beyond hisfears. Even though he had been trained to leave the fears of dying and learned therisks in his job, and Jim had trained many, when that moment hit him, he couldn’tbe prepared. Sudden terror flushed across his body. He wanted tosee his kid, he wanted to see his wife. He couldn’t leave the world withoutsaying a final goodbye. He was going to fight how he could to live to that day. Although the moment never came. No one threatened him,no one came to visit him, for sixteen hours. He was deprived of sleep as he had waited for anyoneto attain to get him, but even the man who had beaten him was nowhere to be seen. Jim closed his eyes in relief and finally breathed outall the frustration of the day. But it was all but the right time to forget. Bane walked to him in swift steps from over the door. The two guards were sprawled unconscious on the floor in the hallway, and Jimdidn’t hear them collapse. His hand was soon on Gordon’s throat, and Jim flicked hiseyes open, terrified at the sight above him. It was dark in the room but thelight from the hallway lit it up faintly. Bane was leaning slightly over him, his body pumped upand his big hand around his throat was tight as ever. He didn’t need all of hisstrength, Gordon was even weaker still, but he wanted to remind him of fulljustice, the power of what he could’ve had. Jim had no air left in his lungs and he clasped at thewrist of Bane’s hand. His eyes were teary, his lungs breaking, but it wasn’tgoing to be the day that he died. Bane just looked as Jim struggled for air. The nails Gordon made marks with on his arm felt like flies, and Bane straightened his arm as he saw the veins in Gordon’s head swell andhis face redden. He looked away, feeling the hands that grasped him lose theirgrip. He heard the swift sound of something, felt a cut inhis arm and backed away in reflex. Bane looked at the wall and saw a batarangcut into it. He moved back with a hoarse yell and turned around toface Batman. Flexing his wounded arm, he stretched himself to a position totake the bat out. Batman had to rethink his strategy since the man was enormous;he couldn’t take him out by force of his fists. He took a handle of the roofwith cutting blades in his hands and kicked Bane on the stomach with both ofhis feet. Bane flew back in the force of it but grew hungrier to fight againsthim. He had pulled off Gordon’s IV in the crash and Bane lookedgreedily as the blood was uncontrollable and Gordon helpless against it. He kicked Batman himself and the cloaked man wasthrown against the wall that cracked behind him. He then strutted in front ofhim to start giving punches on his sides. Batman regained his focus and blockedhim, hit him on his stomach and kicked him on his thigh, but it seemed that hewas not vulnerable to body hits. Batman learned to hit the wound he had made earlier onBane’s arm and cut deep with his blades of his armor. Bane didn’t notice buttook a grasp on Batman and lifted him up with two hands then threw him acrossthe room towards the window that shattered from the impact. Batman was unsure to get up but getting Gordon safewas all that mattered to him. Only then, Bane saw that their clothes were mudded inblood, his wound deep and ragged, and he knew he couldn’t keep up the strengthof his arm. He walked away, but didn’t turn his back on them. He watched Batmanreach Jim still on the bed gasping for breath. “I will finish you off. One wayor another.” Batman didn’t know if Bane’s look was for him orGordon who had remained alive, but he was going to make sure nothing happenedto Jim.
