Research paper thumbnail of Linking geology and archeology: investigations of Corded Ware and contemporary Hunter-Gatherer pottery from SE Lithuania by micro-invasive spectroscopic methods

Twelve potsherds from the 3rd millennium BCE pottery in southeastern Lithuania were analyzed usin... more Twelve potsherds from the 3rd millennium BCE pottery in southeastern Lithuania were analyzed using X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to obtain the bulk geochemical and mineralogical characteristics of the ceramic paste. Microstructures and geochemical variability of the clay matrix and temper were studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). The purpose of this study was to characterize the pottery attributed to the foreign Corded Ware Culture and local Hunter-Gatherers, to imply possible sources of raw material and to evaluate technology choices. The main clusters of major and trace elements in the bulk compositions (XRF; Šatavičė et al., 2022) reflect the five technological styles identified by the manipulation, shaping, and firing conditions of the ceramic raw material. The XRD and FTIR analysis (Šatavičė et al., 2022) indicated a predominance of iron-rich illite clay, qua...

The limited area influenced density of settlement. According to typology of flint finds and pottery finds, it was established that the area was settled down twice: in the Early Neolithic Period and at the beginning of the Bronze Age. Percussion technique, microliths with microburins, end scrapers made from blades of regular shapes, burins and conical cores for making blades by pressure technique reflect the traditions inherited from the Mesolithic. The pottery with organic temper is characteristic to the Early Neolithic Nemunas culture. Due to enlarged database on the southern Lithuanian Stone Age, the similarity between the early pottery of the Nemunas culture and the Narva culture became clearer. It does not reflect cultural interchange and "isles" of settlers of the Narva culture in South Lithuania, but shows general roots of origin of pottery. The second settlement stage is characterised by flake f l ...

A geochemical and mineralogical approach was used to analyze 3rd millennium BCE pottery from Sout... more A geochemical and mineralogical approach was used to analyze 3rd millennium BCE pottery from Southeast Lithuania that is attributed to the foreign Corded Ware Culture and local hunter-gatherers. SEM-EDS, XRF, XRD, and FTIR were used to study the peculiarities of the pottery and to develop hypotheses about the raw material and technology choices present. The amounts of ten major elements in the bulk and clay matrix compositions (XRF, SEM-EDS) and eleven trace analytes in the bulk compositions (XRF) were compared with the Clarke values and tested to highlight the significance (Mann–Whitney U and Wilcoxon Matched Pairs Tests) of the differences in the elemental quantities between the clay matrix and bulk compositions, and between the lighter and darker clay matrixes. These also revealed the advantage of Ward’s clustering method using the City-block distance of bulk compositions as a tool for inter-correlating ceramics in attributing them to specific communities and locations. The XRD, FTIR, and SEM-EDS mineralogical analyses indicated a predominance of iron-rich illite clay, quartz, and alkali feldspar, in addition to very low to medium firing temperatures. All of the pottery samples consisted of hydromicaceous clay from local Quaternary glacial sediments that contain weathered granitoid fragments.

The second settlement stage is characterised by flake flint artefact production technique, flatly retouched arrowheads, knives, a dagger, pointed and oval scrapers, pottery with mineral temper. This is a post-Corded Ware culture settlement which existed at the beginning of the Bronze Age.

Nevertheless the Southern monuments of the Narva culture and the Northern monuments of the Neman culture were not identified. The examinations of the cultural settlements of the Southern Narva, performed in the Southern Lithuania and other locations provided more data, which give the possibility to define the Southern limits of the Narva culture more precisely. The article examines the archeological data, which help to identify the most Southern monuments of the Narva culture of the early and late Neolith more accurately. It is noted that in the bronze age the Narva culture still existed. However, its limits are not detailed due to the lack of sources.

The researches of multilayer archaeological sites, particularly of sandy soil Stone Age settlemen... more The researches of multilayer archaeological sites, particularly of sandy soil Stone Age settlements seems to be less informative because of mixed artefacts of different periods. Nevertheless applying intrasite spatial-statistical analyses and correlating with data of radiocarbon analysis researches of landscape micro-topographical floral and faunal features as well as ethno-archaeology and experimental archaeology patterns gets possible to extract and date different period complexes or activity areas, define internal structure and formation processes of archaeological sites. Studying the site formation processes there were made a number of assumptions concerning the spatial distribution of the artefacts: 1) human activities result in the patterned distribution of artefacts and features; 2) artefacts were used and discarded in the same general area; 3) the tool categories defined by the archaeologists represent functionally discrete and significant units; 4) during a period of occupation, recurring activities were performed in the same general location of the site.

Natural conditions unfavourable for the survival of organic material and the intermingling of artefacts from different periods in sandy settlements limit the ability to precisely date and reconstruct the long, distinctive process of Neolithisation that began in the late 6th millennium bc. Analysing the traces of ceramic vessel use, the structure of the pottery, the coiling and decoration technologies, their changes and reasons, it is possible to understand better the traditions of the Forest Neolithic communities and the encounters of different influences in SE Lithuania. Keywords: Neolithic societies, SE Lithuania, potters, pottery, coiling, decoration, interaction between communities.
