Hello~ You may call me Heidi, and I'm pretty new to this instrument, compared to a lot of people, I think. I've been playing the blessed viola for three years, and I am infatuated with it. I love the mellow , rich, and deep sound-- I fell in love with it the first time I heard it. (laugh)

So currently, I'm learning to play Meditation from Thais, (Lovely song) with all of the shifting and such. Does anyone have any tips they could give to a beginner?

Abandoned Toys makes some of the most beautiful contemporary classical music that I have come across lately. If you like the genre, you should really look into their album, "The witch's garden".

Hi everyone!

I'm in a state of panic as I think I've damaged my viola badly :'( The phone rang whilst I was playing, and it was a call I really needed to take so I propped the viola on a chair whilst I dashed to pick the phone up. Then the viola slid off the chair and onto the floor :-( It's totally my fault.

Anyway now there's a horrible buzzing sound when I play it. There doesn't appear to be anything loose, I've checked the fine tuners and chinrest and all the other things that can come loose, and I've shaken the viola gently and it doesn't make a sound.

Any idea O wise ones? I'm bummed, I'm supposed to be joining an orchestra this evening as well :-(

Thanks,
Toni

Please could someone let me know in what ways a viola bowhold differs from a violin bowhold? I'm a bit confused about this as I thought they were basically the same! If anyone can point me in the direction of photos to demonstrate I'd be very grateful.

Thanks :-)

So I've been playing for about 6 years now, and since I only really play in an orchestra I don't have many solos. But I need one for trying out for pit orchestra in the school musical. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi everyone! I'm new to playing the viola so I thought I'd say hello :)

Back in October I bought a gorgeous viola on a whim, having tried a friend's viola and fallen in love with its rich tone. I had a few months of violin lessons in my last year at school (13 years ago!), which were just enough for me to be able to enjoy playing to myself ever since, so I figured I could enjoy playing the viola in the same way.

I've been learning the oboe for the past 18 months and was doing fine with that, but two months ago I broke a couple of ribs and had to stop playing for a while, which gutted me. Luckily my oboe teacher is also an excellent violin/viola teacher, and she offered to give me a few viola lessons in lieu of oboe lessons. And now I am hooked! :D

I thought I would really struggle to learn the alto clef, as I have tried many times to learn the bass clef with no success, but for some reason it's sunk in when the bass clef hasn't, and that's been very encouraging.

I'm currently working on a transcribed version of Vivaldi's Sonata No.5 in E minor (RV40) for Cello and Keyboard, and my teacher wants me to play the 2nd, 3rd and maybe 4th movements of this in a masterclass she's holding in just over a week's time. I have REALLY struggled with this piece but can just about technically play it now, so I'm feeling good about that. Is anyone else here familiar with it, and if so, do you have any advice/tips on it please?

Cheers!

Toni xxx

OK, I am a violist in High school, and this year is my first year in Chamber orchestra(top orchestra at my school.)Well this year we are auditioning to go to Carnegie hall in New York. Well we got 2 hard songs and 2 easy songs. The hard ones are Marche Militaire Francaise, by Camille Saint-Saens arranged by Merle J. Issac, we were told this is a level 5 and if anyone has any hints on it or a recording i would love you forever. The hardest one for me is Night in Mexico by Paul Creston, i have not been able to find a recording or it anywhere and i am having a lot of difficulty with the parts where it goes into treble (I've never had to read treble before.) The other two are; An arrangement of Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring by J.S. Bach (arranger the same for the other piece) and Elegy by. Robert Washburn these ones are pretty easy thought. Anyway sorry for the long post and any help on the music or finding recordings is much appreciated.
