Nabokov was often severe in his estimation of Dostoevsky’s artistic merit. Yet while Nabokov repeatedly emphasized the primacy of “art” over ideas, or esthetics over moral content, Connolly shows how his own lectures do not always exemplify this ideal. That is, Nabokov’s evaluation of Dostoevsky’s works seems concerned more with ethical, ideological, and religious issues than with what might be called esthetic criteria (such as style, language, or structure). “Nabokov and Dostoevsky: Good Writer, Bad Reader?” argues that if readers look at Dostoevsky’s work using Nabokov’s own preferred criteria, they will find that Dostoevsky’s works often meet those very criteria.

The three experiences are Alë sha's vision of the resurrected Zosima and transfigured Christ, Dmitrij's vision of the suffering babe, and Ivan's vision of the devil (which serves as a counter example to the first two). By examining the content of each of these visions, as well as the parallels and variations in the scenes leading up to these visions, this essay seeks to explore Dostoevskij's understanding of transformational revelatory experience.

Deriding the notion that he was a “frivolous firebird,” he predicted that the day would come when someone would declare him to be a “rigid moralist kicking sin” and “assigning power to tenderness, talent, and pride” (SO, 193). Not only did Nabokov’s prediction come true, but critics continue to discover new facets of the writer’s legacy to highlight and explore. As a result, it has become clear that the man and his work evince enormous complexity. The facile labels applied to Nabokov early in his career – the “cool aesthete,” “impassive gamester” – have been replaced by other labels (if not “rigid moralist,” then “highly ethical” writer, metaphysician, philosopher). Yet all of these labels are proving to be simply one-dimensional; the full depth of Nabokov’s talent has yet to be plumbed. Indeed, in recent years, new aspects of Nabokov’s formidable intellectual legacy, such as his research as a lepi...

Written in less than a month in October 1866, The Gambler is perhaps the most densely textured of Dostoevsky’s short novels. Faced with crushing financial pressure to deliver a new novel to the publisher Fedor Stellovsky by November 1, Dostoevsky created a haunting portrait of a life rent asunder by two competing passions – love for a woman and obsession with an even more powerful intoxicant, the lure of gambling. Many critics, well aware that these two passions reflect powerful currents in Dostoevsky’s own personal life, have mined the novel for links to Dostoevsky’s biography. Dostoevsky himself suffered from an obsession with gambling in the mid-1860s, and he had been involved at that time in a torturous affair with a woman, Apollinaria Suslova, whom many see as the model for the fictional Polina. 1 A second set of readers have focused on the psychological content of...

Materials and methods. Based on the data of our own research and published works, the analysis of the health problems of Belarusian adolescents in modern conditions is being carried out. The features of this socio-demographic group as a specific object of medical and sociological research have been established. The age classifications of adolescence have been studied. The sociological tools used in various studies of adolescent health have been also analysed. Results and conclusions. It has been determined that the main part of the causes of adolescents' health deteriorationis of a socio-behavioural nature. The topical areas of research for further study, such as: identifying the specifics of the lifestyle and living conditions of adolescents, their relationship to health; assessment of the prevalence of potential risk factors in the adolescent population; assessment of the role of the family environment and the educational environment in shaping the health of adolescents have been highlighted. It was revealed that the study of the health of adolescents has its own specifics associated with the age factor. A sociological toolkit has been developed that makes it possible to conduct a comprehensive assessment of factors shaping the health of adolescents, to compare the data obtained from adolescents and their parents, and to identify the contribution and opportunities in solving the problem of the health of adolescents in the family and at school.
