The Pizza Hut story began in 1958 when the Carney brothers borrowed USD 600 from their mother to open a tiny restaurant in the American town of Wichita, Kansas. Pizza Hut was not only the first to introduce pan pizza but also the first to deliver pizza to outer space. Today, Pizza Hut is one of the largest pizza restaurants in the world. Since 1987, JRG has made Pizza Hut a success in Hong Kong, Macao, Myanmar, Taiwan, and Vietnam, each providing unique taste and experience tailored to the region. In Vietnam, Pizza Hut continues to be the leader for the pizza category in local market with around 130 stores and reaches 35/63 cities and provinces across Vietnam. We have more than 3,500 employees working for JRG Vietnam (Pizza Hut brand) across the country; therefore, people are the most valuable asset to us.   Meeting with Green Business Certification Inc. Last August, JRG Vietnam team had the opportunity to meet with Mr. Gopalakrishnan Padmanabhan, Executive Director for Southeast Asia and the Middle East at Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI, the organization that issues the prestigious LEED certification).   Each of our pizza boxes also carries out the mission of sustainable forest development 🌳 Besides the new hexagonal pizza box design, which reduced plastic waste by over 6,000 kg annually, other Pizza Hut packaging, such as takeaway cups and salad boxes, also contributes to forest conservation through FSC-certified paper. FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification, a voluntary standard for forest management organizations and wood product manufacturers, upholds stringent criteria for sustainable development. It balances environmental protection, social benefits for stakeholders (including manufacturers, businesses, communities, and residents), and economic viability. Complying with FSC certification means that Pizza Hut uses natural resources effectively, reduces over-exploitation of forests, and ensures the balance of the forest ecosystem in the process of exploiting raw materials to produce paper boxes. Regarding society, this practice indirectly provides a planned livelihood for forest workers and prevents illegal logging. Therefore, while holding a pizza box in your hand, you are joining us in protecting the forests. Small actions can have a significant impact.   Are you contributing to the ‘400 years problem’ of the Earth? 🌎 ‘Single-use plastic products include plastic and polystyrene food and beverage containers, bottles, straws, cups, cutlery and disposable plastic bags that are designed for or intended to be used once and discarded’*. Due to its convenience, single-use plastic products are widely used in all aspects of life today. However, the enormous consumption without proper treatment has posed a dangerous source of environmental pollution. According to the World Wide Fund For Nature - WWF**, up to 91% of plastic waste is not recycled and up to 99% of plastic waste has a direct or indirect negative impact on ecosystems, flora and fauna, and is gradually seeping into our daily lives. 400 years is the estimated time for plastic to decompose. Notably, experts have estimated that Asia accounts for 50% of the world's plastic waste, including Vietnam. Nevertheless, we can contribute to mitigating this situation by reducing the consumption of single-use plastics through our daily shopping activities. At Pizza Hut Vietnam, we are also striving to reduce the amount of plastic waste in the environment through various practical measures in our business operations.
