Drawing from the experience of an ethnographic case study of a Korean diaspora community in Hanoi, Vietnam, this case study describes and analyzes some major themes of the ethnographic research process, including entering the field, ethics associated with gaining access to online groups, contexts in which the ethnographer conducting participant observation online, and a holistic approach in ethnography. Practical guidance for conducting successful participant observation online, especially in the study of another culture living in one’s own culture are also offered.

From the early 1960s, agricultural collectivization increased in scale and intensity, based on three key principles: collective ownership of the means of production, centralized management of production, and equal allocation of production output on the basis of points. From the early 1980s, however, a process of decollectivizing agriculture started and continued into the early 1990s (Chu Van Lam et al. 1992). This process went alongside the development of a new land tenure system that clarified three types of substantial rights in land: rights of ownership, rights of management, and rights of use to be held by various holders. 1 At the same time, the state has been

In the densely populated peri-urban area – more than 2,000 inhabitants per km2 (see Chapter 8) and multi-activity –, village pressure on land is growing. Owing to urbanised extended families no longer living together and the arrival of migrants, demand for residential land is rising (residential density in the villages of the periurban district of Hoài Đức was 166 inhabitants per hectare in 2009, a density of urban levels).

It examines the views of different parties towards the question on how land should be owned, managed, used, by whom, for whose benefits, and uncovers as well as explains the resulting conflicts over land rights in the Red River Delta since decollectivisation. It postulates that the contending views among parties over decision-making, distribution, and holding of land rights, create dynamics for conflicts, which take place under the form of public resistance, in a number of communities.

This article sheds light on how land conversion has resulted in farmers’ resistance and in what way and to what extent it has transformed their livelihoods in the transitional context of contemporary Vietnam. The article argues that agricultural land use rights remain an important asset for Vietnamese farmers, containing great value and meaning for them besides forming a means of production and therefore a source of income. Because the contemporary land tenure system has not yet recognized an adequate level of private property in relation to land, agricultural land conversion often becomes a contested issue and has often disrupted farmers’ traditional livelihoods, forcing them to face insecure livelihood prospect.
