First and foremost let me say that I am a pagan and I worship the goddess Hecate, but I made friends today with a lovely Haitian lady today who seems to be in voudou. After thirty minutes of talking she told me she saw signs of Erzulie Freda around me and that she is my ''spirit head'', that while I worship another deity that Erzulie Freda has a strong influence in my life and that has caused some problems for me. I am not sure exactly what she means I have looked into somewhat Erzulie Freda (google/wikipedia) it does sound like me and her have similarities but I am not sure what ''spirit head'' means, my realm is european witchcraft and ancient Greece/Rome. I am curious as to what others think and I must admit that the concept is interesting but I know little about it.

Last year my cousin and I traveled to New Orleans, in part to view the gorgeous French Quarter, but primarily to visit a Voudou priestess. We both received immense help from her. Since then several Voudou-related things have happened.
The first that comes to mind is a dream I had, and while I don't recall the details anymore, I remember dreaming of a large snake and waking up saying the name Damballah. Once I had shuffled around enough and had some coffee I actually remembered who Damballah Wedo is.
The second incident was just this weekend. My cousins and I were using a spirit board, and I was instructed to make a psychic powers powder. The instructions confused my cousins, who don't really know anything about Voudou, but I immediately recognized the name and where to find the recipe.
There are a few other incidents, but these are the two that stick out in my mind. The problem is I practice European witchcraft, not Voudou, so why am I receiving visitations and messages from Loa? One of my cousins believes something resonated with me in New Orleans and has tagged along to make itself a part of my own practices. As Voudou practitioners, what's your take?

Or did anyone else notice a certain tinge of Vodoun themes in "Black Swan?" Natalie Portman's character, in order to find strength, "took on" another persona. However sometime that character manifested in unpredictable ways. It seemed awfully similar to being ridden by a Loa. The Persona seemed very similar to Erzuli Le Rouge....even to the point of her eyes turning red.
Hi all -
I'm very interested in working with Mother Mary, and when I posted to a Catholic Folk Magic group about this, one of the responses that came back was that Mother Mary is sometimes called Our Lady of Lourdes. In my past experience, Our Lady of Lourdes has been associated with Erzulie Dantor. Is there an aggressive side to Mother Mary that is maybe not so well known? Are the lines drawn between these two false? Who would be syncretized to Mother Mary in Vodou? Thanks so much for the help.
Hi, everyone! First time poster and fairly new to the community.
Name's Jessica - I am 26 and live in Orlando, Florida.. and I have some questions for ya'll. I have scoured the internet up and down to try and find the answers ( as well as looking for a more particular LJ community ) but I still come up diddly-squat; If anything, instead of answering my questions, more were created.
My apologies as this is really more Santeria related then Voudou - but as I said I strained to find another community able to help me.
For at least a year now I have been feeling the pull of Yemaya. I keep getting the impression that she wants to communicate with me and has teachings for me. My problem and concern is this: I want to follow my gut instinct and work with her. Problem is that I dont have the finances to even begin becoming an initiate of Santeria. I come from a Wiccan background so the concept of working with a female Deity is not unfamiliar. I simply do not know the proper way to approach this. I do not want to let this call go ignored but I feel as though my hands are tied. Is it appropriate to still set up an altar and speak with her as she seems to be trying to speak with me? Would she even listen to a non-initiate?
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. I am feeling so conflicted.

My name is Jessica, and I'm a Vodou beginner.
I first got into the Baron Samedi in a very strange way. Through Dr Facilier in Disney's The Princess And The Frog, so to speak. (In almost the same way Son Of The Mask got me into Loki, a long time ago.) I've seen and heard many gods and goddesses, including Baron...but I have one small complaint. I don't know if he's real or not! Every time I see him, it's with my mind's eye, not my true eyes. Drives me nuts. Right now, I have a little spot on my nightstand to put a little skeleton toy, so that probably works as a makeshift altar. One Vodou practicioner said that the Baron reminded her of Beetlejuice, and I can clearly see why!
Anyway, it's nice to be here!
PS: To all the victims of the earthquake in Haiti, I hope the Baron guides you to a wonderful afterlife. To the survivors, keep praying! Red Cross is comin' to help!
