Research paper thumbnail of Case Study on Profit-Maximizing Combination of Vegetable Crops for Small-Scale Farmers in Leyte, Philippines

Intercropping is one of the potential agricultural practices that can help maximize productivity ... more Intercropping is one of the potential agricultural practices that can help maximize productivity given limited farm area. This study seeks to compare the production output from the existing vegetable combinations grown under intercropping, which could be useful to farmers in the Visayas, particularly in Leyte. Gross margin analysis was conducted to evaluate the profitability of each crop mix. A linear programming model was used to determine optimal land use options for the identified vegetable mixes. Results show that farmers can increase profit across different crop combinations using linear programming approach. In particular, the gross margin analysis results show that sweet pepper-eggplant intercropping combinations provide farmers the highest profit per m2. This combination could maximize profit up to PHP211,887 per 608.97m2 of farm area, as suggested from the linear programming analysis. Farmers can achieve maximum profit using the...

Research paper thumbnail of Gender differences in the coping mechanisms to disruptions brought by COVID-19 pandemic among working adults in the Rural Philippines: The Case of Visayas State University

The academic institutions were caught unprepared and had to adjust abruptly. With this, we assessed how working adults in a state university in rural Philippines are coping with the disruptions brought by the pandemic. We conducted a cross-sectional online survey on May 18 to 23, 2020 where 133 working adults from the Visayas State University, Leyte, Philippines responded to the survey. Results show that the top most rank coping mechanism for both men and women is doing household chores. Results further suggest that men are more inclined to surfing the net and use social media while women focus more on praying and gardening. Pets are considered as an important companion to cope better with the pandemic. Our results highlight differences in coping mechanisms between working men and women in dealing with the pandemic. Empirical findings suggest ...

Research paper thumbnail of Applicability of the International Valuation Standards in Estimating the Market Value of Agricultural Lands in Leyte, Philippines

Land valuation using the International Valuation Standards (IVS) was just adopted in the Philippi... more Land valuation using the International Valuation Standards (IVS) was just adopted in the Philippines in October 2009 as reflected in its first edition of Philippine Valuation Standards. Part of the adoption however, is the question whether the valuation approaches namely; the market or sales comparison, income and cost approaches specified in the standards are readily applicable for land valuation purposes. This study aimed to determine the applicability of the said approaches. This was conducted in Leyte, Philippines with a total of 164 agricultural land samples being estimated. Based on the actual experience of the researcher and the available circumstances in the study areas, the income approach, in general, provided the most credible estimate of market values of all the samples because it has so far had the most complete information needed for the analysis. Results of the other approaches were not very reliable because of lack of needed information to support its estimation. For...

A big bulk of the timber supply is imported from the neighboring islands of Cebu and Mindanao and from other countries. With the continuous increase in population, demand for residential housing is growing and consequently timber for construction purposes. This is accompanied by an increase in the demand for wood products like furniture. The timber shortage is likely to continue especially with the government’s campaign for log ban. The gap in supply and demand can be filled by the harvests from the tree farms of small holders. Tree growers have to be educated with the DENR rules on tree farm registration and cutting to facilitate the harvesting of trees in their farms.

They are considered as public goods, whereby society tends to overexploit and overconsume. In this regard, the valuation of four selected tourist destinations in Camotes Islands, Cebu, Philippines was determined. This study specifically aims to (1) estimate the demand function and consumer surplus of tourists, (2) determine the factors affecting the number of visits of tourists in every destination, (3) determine the tourists’ willingness to pay for entrance fee for each destination and (4) provide policy implications for local policy-makers and resource managers. On-site surveys were conducted to gather primary data. A total of 125 respondents were interviewed after selection through consecutive sampling. Using pseudo Poisson maximum likelihood estimator, results reveal that the recreational value of Buho Rock Resort, Lake Danao Park, Sa...

The SEP was implemented in 2011 with the aim of boosting the socio-economic development of many powerless villages all over the Philippines. The impact of SEP was quantified using pooled Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression applying the difference-in-difference estimation technique. The variables of interest include income, study hours and household assets. Results show that the SEP has no significant influence with income. However, positive relationships are found with the asset index of the households and study hours of the children. These imply that availability of electricity translates to accumulation of more household assets and increases the number hours of children spent studying at night. Although the effect on income is not significant, estimation results show robust increase in household assets. Estimation from the pooled OLS,...

Most of the farmer-respondents grow gmelina and mahogany on their farms. Other trees species grown include the exotics of mangium, auri and ipil-ipil, and the indigenous species of molave, narra, antipolo, bagras and toog. The mean estimated stumpage volume available from an average tree farm for the areas covered by the study was 597.38 m3 over an area of 2.05 ha. Sixteen out of the 39 farmers interviewed had commenced harvesting their trees. Seven lumber dealers and timber processors were also interviewed in the study. On the average, they have been in business for 14.3 years. Most procured their raw materials from sources outside Leyte, particularly Mindanao and Cebu, only two sourcing their raw materials within Leyte provinces. Tree species that they had commonly processed inc...
