Unimodal and multimodal hand-based systems and technologies are presented, and various levels of fusion for hand-based biometric systems are discussed. Finally, a description of the design and development of a multimodal personal authentication system based on the fusion of hand-geometry and palmprint features at the matching-score level is given.

The proposed combination is of significance since both the palmprint and hand-shape images are proposed to be extracted from the single hand image acquired from a digital camera. Several new hand-shape features that can be used to represent the hand shape and improve the performance are investigated. The new approach for palmprint recognition using discrete cosine transform coefficients, which can be directly obtained from the camera hardware, is demonstrated. None of the prior work on hand-shape or palmprint recognition has given any attention on the critical issue of feature selection. Our experimental results demonstrate that while majority of palmprint or hand-shape features are useful in predicting the subjects identity, only a small subset of these features are necessary in practice for building an accurate model for identification. The comparison and combination of proposed features is evaluated on the diverse classification schemes; naive Bayes (normal, estimated, multinomial), decision trees ( 4 5, LMT), -NN, SVM, and FFN. Although more work remains to be done, our results to date indicate that the combination of selected hand-shape and palmprint features constitutes a promising addition to the biometrics-based personal recognition systems.

This paper presents a new biometric approach to on-line personal identification using palmprint technology. In contrast to the existing methods, our on-line palmprint identification system employs low-resolution palmprint images to achieve effective personal identification. The system consists of two parts: a novel device for on-line palmprint image acquisition, and an efficient algorithm for fast palmprint recognition. A robust image coordinate system is defined to facilitate image alignment for feature extraction. In addition, a 2-D Gabor phase encoding scheme is proposed for palmprint feature extraction and representation. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed system.

Rid of the needs for pegs, the acquisition of the hand images is simplified and more user-friendly. Geometrical significant landmarks are e xtracted from the segmented images, and are used for hand alignment and the construction of recognition features. The recognition process is hierarchical in nature, and it employs a Gaussian Mixture Model for the first group of features, followed by a distance metric classification of the second group of features if necessary. The method has been tested on a medium size dataset of 323 images with promising results of 89% hit (true acceptance) rate and 2.2% false acceptance rate.

Biometrics-based authentication is a veriÿcation approach using the biological features inherent ... more Biometrics-based authentication is a veriÿcation approach using the biological features inherent in each individual. They are processed based on the identical, portable, and arduous duplicate characteristics. In this paper, we propose a scanner-based personal authentication system by using the palm-print features. It is very suitable in many network-based applications. The authentication system consists of enrollment and veriÿcation stages. In the enrollment stage, the training samples are collected and processed by the pre-processing, feature extraction, and modeling modules to generate the matching templates. In the veriÿcation stage, a query sample is also processed by the pre-processing and feature extraction modules, and then is matched with the reference templates to decide whether it is a genuine sample or not. The region of interest (ROI) for each sample is ÿrst obtained from the pre-processing module. Then, the palm-print features are extracted from the ROI by using Sobel and morphological operations. The reference templates for a speciÿc user are generated in the modeling module. Last, we use the template-matching and the backpropagation neural network to measure the similarity in the veriÿcation stage. Experimental results verify the validity of our proposed approaches in personal authentication. ?

This paper attempts to improve the performance of palmprint-based verification system by integrating hand geometry features. Unlike other bimodal biometric systems, the users do not have to undergo the inconvenience of using two different sensors since the palmprint and hand geometry features can be acquired from the same image, using a digital camera, at the same time. Each of these gray level images are aligned and then used to extract palmprint and hand geometry features. These features are then examined for their individual and combined performances. The image acquisition setup used in this work is inherently simple and it does not employ any special illumination nor does it use any pegs to cause any inconvenience to the users. Our experimental results on the i mage dataset from 100 users confirm the utility of combining hand geometry features with those from palmprints using a simple image acquisition setup. † High resolution hand images, of the order of 500 dpi, can also be used to extract fingerprint fe atures.
