Michel Coppieters is Professor / Gewoon Hoogleraar in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy at MOVE Research Institute Amsterdam at the Faculty of Human Movement Sciences, at VU University Amsterdam in The Netherlands.

Previously, he was Associate Professor at the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at The University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, and at the Department of Physiotherapy at Kathmandu University/Dhulikhel Hospital in Nepal. He obtained his doctorate at the University of Leuven in Belgium.

Michel directs the Neuropathic Pain Research Group which aims to (1) increase the evidence for the clinical diagnosis and non-invasive management of patients with neuropathic pain, and (2) gain a better insight in the pathophysiology of neuropathies. He is the coordinator of the master of science program in musculoskeletal physiotherapy which will commence in September 2014. He is also a senior course instructor at the Neuro-Orthopaedic Institute, delivering 2-day workshops such as 'Mobilisation of the Nervous System' and 'Neurodynamics and the Neuromatrix' (www.noigroup.com).

In 2012, he lived a year in Nepal where he volunteered at Dhulikhel Hospital and Kathmandu University (www.dhulikhelhospital.org), assisting the local staff in setting up a Bachelor program in Physiotherapy. Since that experience, he will take any opportunity to travel back to Nepal to catch up with friends and go for a hike in the high Himalayas.
