Goucher Pirates on the Web (original) (raw)

Hello loves,We've gone ahead and created a new Goucher Pyrate Alliance community for official-type things this year. It's not that we don't love you anymore, I promise. Really, it's not you, it's us. We can still be friends. You're very special and we'll never forget you.But really, it's clear that the Wagner Crew is a very different animal from the GPA these days, and the WC profile is chock-full of disclaimers separating it from the club anyway. Also, it hasn't actually been updated in months. So you crazy kids carry on with your general debauchery without fear of the administration, and come back and hang out with us from time to time. | |

Congratulations! | [20 May 2007|10:49am] |

[ **mood** | pleased ] Congratulations to Pyrate President Ray for being quoted in an interview about pyrates in today's Baltimore Sun! They've got the Captain from the Pyrates Royale on the front page, and it's three pages of pyrates total. Pick up a copy or check it out online! (I think the interviewer is mildly amused that the club is an officially recognized organization.) | |

[ **mood** | pleased ] For those of you who can't be here, we cheered to you earier in the evening. You are missed :)I brought a piece of the incinerator for us to drink around tonight. It lives on! It shall be coming with a few of us to San Francisco in the fall, and we shall spread its glory to the west coast."Health To The Company" was a little heavier than usual tonight, with the line "for this company might never all meet here again" ringing a bit truer than before....But good times. <3Love, Most of the original, the only, the true...WAGNER CREW. | |

[ **mood** | lazy ] This is Ray. I'm aware that my having created a livejournal goes against everything I've ever said, but the prospect of losing touch with everyone after graduation makes me sad. I don't know if anyone pays attention to this community anymore, but I figured I'd put this here in hopes that people will love me and be my friend. Stupid livejournal is already giving me a complex about all of that...I still maintain that this was probably a terrible decision...and will just be another way for me to not do my work.BE MY FRIEND!!! <3 | |

Pirate Special on MythBusters | [14 Jan 2007|07:23pm] |
---|---|
[ **mood** | amused ] On Wednesday 1/17/07, MythBusters on the Discovery Channel will be busting Pirate myths. "Jamie and Adam investigate exactly what would happen if a pirate ship fired a broadside cannon barrage into another ship, working their way up from a small-scale cannon to a full-scale 6-pound ball."They were also talking about rum, eye patches, and other such piratical myths. Just something I thought y'all might want to take a look at. :-) | |

PIRATE EMAIL | [18 Sep 2006|01:36pm] |
---|---|
REPRINT OF EMAIL FROM SEPT 15(If this is the first e-mail you have received from the GPA I apologize. There were issues with some of the names on the mailing list, but I think I have resolved most of them. When one has to enter 190 some names into a contact list there are bound to be typos. If you know someone who is still not getting the e-mails and would like to, please tell them to e-mail this address directly and I will add them) Ahoy there! First, let me say THANK YOU to all of you lovely pirate types who came to the meeting on Wednesday. We were honestly not expecting such a big, enthusiastic turnout and we were just tickled pink that you all showed up. My favorite part was, of course, the singing. We will now be ending all of our meetings with a song. You only have yourselves to blame. In any case. Our trip to the Maryland Renaissance Festival is scheduled for Sept. 30, 2006. We realize that there may be some conflicts, but this is overall the best day to take the trip. Admission will be $13.00 so long as at least 20 people go (last year we weren't even a club and we took about 50 people with us, so I'm not worried). In order to keep things running smoothly we are asking that anyone who wants to go to Ren Fest come to one of two meetings: Wednesday Sept. 27 at 10:00pm in Geen or Thursday Sept. 28 at 10:00 in Geen. This is just so that we can see your shining face, get your name down on a list (in order to organize carpooling), and make sure that you're serious about going. If you can positively not make either one of those meeting times (it will be a very brief meeting), please, please e-mail me BEFORE Wednesday Sept. 27. We have not set a departure time for the trip yet, but I'm looking at about 11am. Ren Fest tends to be an all day deal, so don't expect to be getting out of there until 7:30ish in the evening (unless you make alternate plans with your carpool, I'm not forcing you to stay all day). If anyone who did not sign up at the meeting (and have not yet e-mailed me) would be able to drive, please let me know. As I said in the previous e-mail we're working on getting gas money, but can't promise anything. I will be sending out a confirmation e-mail to all drivers next week. In other news: Talk Like a Pirate Day is this Tuesday. Sept.19. Break out your best pirate lingo (and gear) and swash some verbal buckles. Our first BAKE SALE is officially scheduled for Friday Oct. 20th. This is the Friday of family weekend and, according to the schedule, parents are being encouraged to attend classes...Parents like baked goods (as we learned last year at accepted applicants day) and they generally have more money on them than your average student. So. We take them for all they're worth. We will be baking for the sale on Thursday Oct. 19th at 9:00 in one of the T-Commons rooms. If you would like to help us bake don't feel like you have to respond to this e-mail (there will be another one, I'm sure), just pencil it into your calendar. Our next official meeting will probably be held sometime after the trip to Ren Fair. care of The First Mate (fmr.)Yarr! The Head Wench care of The First Mate (fmr.) | |

Talk Like a Pirate Day is Tomorrow! | [18 Sep 2006|10:50am] |
---|---|
From my Mommy:My Word a Day email is celebrating Talk Like a Pirate Day with pirate wordsall week. Thought you might find it amusing.Momdebconn@cox.net703-573-0669-----Original Message-----From: Wordsmith [mailto:wsmith@wordsmith.org]Sent: Monday, September 18, 2006 12:13 AMTo: linguaphile@wordsmith.orgSubject: A.Word.A.Day--buccaneerGuest Wordsmith John (Ol' Chumbucket) Baur (chumbucketATtalklikeapirate.com)writes:Every September 19 people around the world celebrate International Talk Likea Pirate Day. It's been marked on all continents -- even Antarctica. Why?Because it's fun, it's anarchic. Its very whimsy -- trying to get everyoneon the planet to talk like a stereotypical Caribbean buccaneer on the sameday each year -- sets it apart from other holidays. The holiday had its genesis during a racquetball game between John Baur andMark Summers, two friends in Albany, Oregon. It was a private joke thatwent around the world. The rest is, if not history, at least a good story, which you can read at their Web site http://www.talklikeapirate.com .To help you celebrate the day this year, we offer a sampling of words basedon pirate lingo.A note -- I've often heard people talk about pirates' "cockney accents."Wrong! The stereotypical pirate has a Cornish accent, based on theperformance of Long John Silver by actor Robert Newton in the 1950 Disneyversion of "Treasure Island". He was from Cornwall, and his over-the-topperformance and native accent are the reason people think that's what apirate sounded like. Of course, pirates came from all nationalities. Butthe pop culture image is firmly embedded, and Robert Newton is the reasonwhy.(John Baur worked 23 years in the newspaper business and two years as auniversity science writer before casting his lot as a pirate author andperformer. He and Summers are co-authors of the book "Pirattitude!")buccaneer (buk-uh-NEER) noun 1. An unscrupulous adventurer in politics, business, etc. 2. A pirate.[From French boucanier (buccaneer, barbecuer, hunter of wild ox),from boucan (a frame for smoking meat), from Tupi mukem.]Today's word in Visual Thesaurus: http://visualthesaurus.com/?w1=buccaneerBuccaneer comes from a French adaptation of a Carib Indian word bukan, away of slow-cooking meat over a low fire on a grill. The first bouncanierswere interlopers in "Spain's" Caribbean, and the Spaniards tried to drivethem out. It was only too easy for England to recruit the buccaneers intoattacking Spanish interests. So modern day barbecuers, with their Webbergas grills and comical aprons, are actually descendants of the classicCaribbean pirates. "[Greg] Palast's book is packed with groundbreaking new information about the corruption of empire, the lies of our leaders and the raiding of the treasury by crony capitalists and corporate buccaneers." FROM RAY | [01 Sep 2006|02:18am] |
---|---|
Hello my lovely piratical types,Just so you know before you get to the end of the letter, this is Ray. Looking over the e-mail list for this particular group I realized that many of you have graduated (and in some cases are still listed under a Goucher e-mail address. I was told this would forward). If you graduated types don't want to get pirate e-mails any more please tell me. If you do want to keep getting emails, and received this through Goucher email, please send us an updated email. Those of you who are still here don't have much of a choice - I know where you sleep. So, unless anyone objects, I'm going to try to start up where Ben left off last year. God only knows how this is going to work out. I think the best place to begin this year is probably **Club Rush (Thurs Sept. 7/Fri Sept. 8th).**Rather than using the old pirate e-mail list, I feel that it makes more sense to start fresh this year. For all we know half of the people on the existing list may have dropped out of Goucher. So, if you, or anyone you know who did not receive this e-mail (I'm going off of what Ben had set up last year for the list) will be available Thurs 7/Fri 8 to recruit people that would be wonderful. Also, in order to be more organized about this, Molly and I were considering having a little mini-exec board type meeting to get things started. We're thinking Monday Sept. 4th at 10pm in Geen (and if Geen is occupied we can move to the Game Room or something). If this time does not work for anyone who I would more or less hope to be there (namely you people who still go here) please let me know. Thanks to all of you who actually read this far.The Head Wench | |

I know this is quick, but I think we should have a meeting tomorrow (friday) night. theres a lot that needs to be discussed and decisions need to be made quickly. I'm thinking 8 pm in geen, followed by an after meeting shindig off campus somewhere, but thats just my vibe... open to suggestion | |

Desperate inquiry: | [29 Jun 2006|10:31pm] |
---|---|
[ **mood** | curious ] To those of you who were involved in The Sandman comicbook circulations last semester:Who knows where my copy of Preludes and Nocturnes is??? It is no longer in my posession, and I am terribly saddened by that. I have wondered if it was mistakenly returned to that Stylish Jew, but I have not heard anything from him. Please let me know if you have a copy of that lying around which isn't yours. That is all. Thank you. | |

A plea | [08 May 2006|01:41am] |
---|---|
[ **mood** | sad ] So my camera busted open on GIG, and I lost my entire roll of film. (It wasn't finished yet, but was close.) I was wondering if anyone had any pictures of GIG with me in them, preferably with friends, preferably looking ridiculous. I doubt this, as it would be too wonderful and convenient. Also, kids who went to Faerie Fest, if I could maybe share those pictures too? (Broken camera can't take pictures.) When my mom eventually gives me the ones she took, I'll post them for all to see our splendour. In the meantime, this kinda really depresses me. :( | |
