S. Manjunath. It is his constant support and encouragement that make it possible for me to finish my dissertation. He is not only my research advisor but also a great mentor in my life. Working and interacting with him was truly an invaluable learning experience. My sincere thanks go to Dr. Jonathan Foote. Part of my dissertation work was inspired by my interaction with Dr. Foote during my summer internship at the FX Palo Alto Lab. I learned many research skills by working with him. I would like to thank Professor Yuan-Fang Wang and Professor Shivkumar Chandrasekaran for serving on my committee and for constructive discussions about my dissertation work. I would like to thank the graduate students in Image Processing and Vision Research

When we consider only this set of pulsars, the reasons for considering a more complicated model are not obvious. The resulting model components have mean local midplane densities of 2.15 × 10-2 cm-3 and 0.36 × 10-2 cm-3, and exponential scale heights of 0.94 and 0.053 kpc, consistent with Reynolds (1991). The first component have a very large scale length, while the second drops after 1 kpc. We prefer a model which varies as sech2(x), rather than exp(-x), in both the radial and vertical direction, whose fit parameters essentially describe the same electron distribution. Using deviations of the observed dispersion measures from this smooth model, we find evidence for the two interior spiral arms at 2 and 5 kpc.

Research paper thumbnail of Cooperative Tasks between Humans and Robots in Industrial Environments

International Journal of Advanced Robotic Systems, 2012

Collaborative tasks between human operators and robotic manipulators can improve the performance ... more Collaborative tasks between human operators and robotic manipulators can improve the performance and flexibility of industrial environments. Nevertheless, the safety of humans should always be guaranteed and the behaviour of the robots should be modified when a risk of collision may happen. This paper presents the research that the authors have performed in recent years in order to develop a human-robot interaction system which guarantees human safety by precisely tracking the complete body of the human and by activating safety strategies when the distance between them is too small. This paper not only summarizes the techniques which have been implemented in order to develop this system, but it also shows its application in three real human-robot interaction tasks.

With the increase of computational power in the last decades, tracking of objects or human beings... more With the increase of computational power in the last decades, tracking of objects or human beings has become a growing research area in the image processing and engineering fields. Its applications range from military and security to medicine and sports. In particular, tracking applications in sports have the main purpose of extracting useful information for the analysis of a player's or team's performance through video analysis based on statistical measures (Kristan et al. 2009). In the hard competitive environment of today's professional ...
