Developing countries are those in which economic wealth is either not widespread or in which economic wealth is significantly behind countries of a similar size. Manufacturing productivity enables the increase of gross domestic product (GDP). However, manufacturing productivity also has a potential for increased pollution and toxicity. Rural communities in developing countries can use sustainable manufacturing techniques to improve GDP output while minimizing the damage to the environment and community health. Universities can play a pivotal role in enabling the transfer of university research to small manufacturers via online training. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can vastly enable collaboration and rapid prototyping of sustainable products (e.g. 3D printed prototypes). Before all of this can begin, it is important to outline the scope, limitations, and evaluation metrics for an online University Green Technology Business Incubator (UgTBI). This concept document uses the UN Global Compact principles as a basis for operational goals. Additional information can be requested from JOOUST Project Team Leader, Dr Benard Muok bmuok@yahoo.com)

Firms focused on keeping innovation exclusively in-house may find it difficult to develop products which satisfy the latest trends and diversity of interests. Open innovation models allow firms to integrate external IP as well as external resources into the firm’s production strategies. The challenges are even more complex in emerging economies where inadequate transportation infrastructure and the soft capital networks of business are still under formation. Consumer preferences are different but there are no established channels for obtaining consumer data or reliable supplier information. The liability of foreignness makes investments risky because developing local capacity could easily result in the development of a firm’s strongest local competitor. Success is possible but it does not occur over night and it depends to a large part on the foreign firm’s flexibility to integrate local norms into its operational procedures while focusing on shared values.

Inclusive business models focus on the integration of large and small firms. They can also focus on the integration of small firms with low-income communities. Pollution and waste are common environmental problems in low income areas. Companies can benefit by engaging low income communities in local recycling programs via which the community delivers used consumer goods to companies. Compensation models should incentivize voluntary recycling while still remaining below the cost of acquiring virgin raw materials.
