15+ Best Indoor & Outdoor Swimming Pools in Tbilisi for 2023 (original) (raw)

An extended list of swimming pools in Tbilisi, Georgia – including the best indoor pools for swimming laps and outdoor leisure pools in and around the city.

Summer in Tbilisi means one of two things: Either you get out of the city quick smart and head for the Black Sea coast or cooler mountain pastures, or you invest in a pair of flip flops and hit the pool.

Having lived through two full Tbilisi summers, I can tell you the heat and the air quality is about as bad as people say. This is far from favourite time of year in Tbilisi (I much prefer winter, fall or spring – anything really!).

Luckily Tbilisi has a multitude of pools made for lounging, exercising and sipping cocktails by. Many of the indoor pools on this list are heated so you can use them in winter too.

Here’s where to go swimming in Tbilisi this summer, plus a few pools on the outskirts of the city that are more than worth a short, sweaty drive.

This popular pool seems to have it all: A rooftop location with views of the city and river, ample seating and sun lounges, and a bar-cafe serving cocktails, refreshing drinks and light bites.

The pool is outdoors but partially covered by a canopy, so there is shade at certain times of day. There are plenty of leafy plants for an oasis vibe and a bit of privacy.

This is a newly opened fitness club in the heart of Old Tbilisi that combines a gym, a Finnish sauna, pilates reformer machines, and most importantly, a gorgeous rooftop swimming pool.

Fit Club offers three types of packages: the One Day package is designed for those who are looking for a complete day of relaxation in the gym, swimming pool, and sauna. Here you have unlimited time to exercise, swim in the rooftop pool, and restore your energy in the dry sauna.

The Start package includes individualised training programs and dietary recommendations, in addition to access to the gym, pool, and Finnish pool from 7am-6pm on weekdays. This package is worth 600 GEL and is designed for those who want to get fit, lose weight, or maintain a healthy lifestyle.

And the Unlimited package is a one-month pass for 800 GEL and includes all the benefits and services available for the Start package but for unlimited time (from 7am-11pm).

Radisson Blu Iveria (off Rustaveli Ave)

One of a few Tbilisi hotels with a pool that offers day passes to non-guests, the Radisson Blu Iveria is your best option for swimming in the very centre of Tbilisi.

The outdoor pool is 25m with ample deck space, deck chairs and umbrellas, plus there’s a bar that hosts cocktail events and DJs on the weekend.

The indoor pool is encased in glass and offers magnificent views of the city and Mtatsminda mountain. Massage and other treatments are available at the adjoining Anne Semonin Spa.

Monthly passes are also available and include access to the small indoor pool plus discounts on spa treatments and the bar-restaurant.

Krtsanisi Residence Complex (near the British Embassy)

A swimming pool in Tbilisi surrounded by green hills and trees.

Set inside a former government residence in the Krtsanisi diplomatic quarter (15 minutes by car from Freedom Square), this is a large outdoor pool fringed by a grassy lawn. Green hills rise up beyond the wooden deck, making this property feel more remote than it actually is.

Choose from one of a dozen deck chairs set up on a tiered balcony or a curtained daybed made from wooden palettes. There’s a bar/restaurant onsite, plus a new beauty bar.

The house itself is quite beautiful so set aside some time to explore the architecture and the grounds – and take in the city views – while you’re here.

Krtsanisi is a kid-friendly pool and offers discounted Family Packages. Children under 5 enter for free.

No reservations required – walk-ins only. Prices include a lounger and a towel.

Forma Summer (Chugureti)

This petite pool in Chugureti (7 minutes by car from Fabrika), seems to take on a fresh colour scheme every season. The small deck area is partially shaded by trees and looks out over green hills.

Ping pong tables, a mirrorball and DJ decks are on hand for entertainment. By day, the kitchen serves fresh juices and light meals. After dark, the pool bar transforms into pool party central.

Reservations required – book via Facebook or phone.

Holiday Inn Pool Garden (Saburtalo)

A rooftop pool with lounge chairs and a plate of fruit salad.

This is a sparkling 25m pool with a huge sun deck and a hint of greenery. Entry to the hotel sauna is included with the day pass as is towel hire. The restaurant and bar here are highly regarded and laptop friendly.

Look out for end-of-season specials that usually kick off mid-September with a 20% discount. Seasonal passes are also available and include use of the spa and fitness centre.

No reservations required – first in, best dressed.

Fibonacci (on Tbilisi Sea)

People sit on lounge chairs on a tented terrace on the edge of Tbilisi Sea reservoir.

Though not technically a pool, this cool covered terrace and swimming area is located on Tbilisi Sea, the city’s biggest reservoir. As of summer 2023 this is one of the only places on the Tbilisi Sea where swimming is permitted – after a number of accidents, the area is now patrolled and ‘free swimming’ in the reservoir is prohibited.

Find Fibonacci inside the Tbilisi Sea Club, a 20-minute taxi ride from Freedom Square.

Basically Fibonacci is a huge floating deck covered by a transparent dome, with sun chairs and a restaurant-bar. Tbilisi Sea is safe for swimming – jump off the pontoon to wet your toes or if you’re feeling fancy, charter one of the club’s yachts.

Of course you can swim anywhere in the lake for free… But summer’s so much better with a backing track and a cocktail to sip on. A weekly open-air cinema and other events happen here throughout summer. SUP boards are available to hire, and there is a sauna.

No reservations required – show up and grab a sun bed whenever you fancy.

Olympic Pool (Dighomi)

A large swimming pool in Georgia with marked lanes and colourful grandstands.

Not to be confused with Olympic Swimming Complex in Isani (featured later on this list), this open-air pool is north of the centre in Dighomi, 20 minutes by car from Freedom Square.

Built in 2015 for the Youth Olympic Festival, there are two international standard pools (50m and 35m) replete with colourful grandstands. Inside, there’s a kids pool, a cafe and a bar.

While it’s possible to swim laps here (at least one of the pools has lane markers), this is also a great place to catch some rays. On weekends and during summer every spare square inch of concrete is covered with chaise longues. Just note that there is zero shade.

Day and multi-day passes are available and can be purchased at the pool (note that payment can only be made by card – no cash) or online via FitPass with a discount.

No reservations required. Prices vary depending on the time of day.

Beaumonde Garden (Saburtalo)

Located north of Saburtalo on the way to Dighomi, Beaumonde Garden is a hotel and conference complex with two pools: A terrace pool, and a garden pool.

Coffee, cocktails and snacks are available from the onsite bar-cafe. Opening hours and prices vary between the two pools, with the outdoor Terrace Pool being the premium choice.

Reservations required – book via Facebook on phone.

Pool 53 (Mtskheta)

How about a swim in the shadow of one of Georgia’s most sacred monuments, Jvari Monastery? Located 20 minutes by car north of Tbilisi in Mtskheta, Pool 53 is perched on the edge of the Mtkvari river and has the best views of any swimming spot on this list.

There’s a large wooden deck, outdoor showers and an onsite bar-restaurant that hosts live music and events throughout the summer.

Places are limited and bookings essential – message them on Facebook during business hours to secure your spot.

Pool Veranda (Mtskheta)

A beautiful swimming pool and cottage in Mtskheta, Georgia.

Also in Mtskheta but a touch further along the highway (30 minutes by car from Tbilisi), Pool Veranda is well worth the drive for the chance to lounge beneath trellises laden with grape vines.

This place has a bit of a Tuscan-villa vibe, with stone walls, blooming bougainvilleas and a cute cottage serving as a restaurant-bar. The price includes towel rental. Children under 6 enter for free, and kids under 15 are eligible for a discount.

No reservations required (but it might still be a good idea to phone ahead).

Giuaani Winery (Kakheti)

A swimming pool surrounded by leafy gardens in Kakheti, Georgia.

Please note: The 2023 opening date for the pool at Giuanni Winery has not yet been announced.

An hour east of Freedom Square via the Kakheti Highway on the way to Sighnaghi, this gorgeous family winery and hotel now offers day passes for its 15m outdoor pool.

This is my top choice if you’re craving fresh air and the feel of real grass between your toes. The gardens are beautiful (hammocks and fire pit included), there’s a great restaurant onsite, and obviously you can pair your swim with a wine tasting or a glass of the house drop from the pool bar.

The pool itself is clean and tidy, with ample seating and umbrellas for shade.

E60 Pool (Saguramo)

People lounge around a small swimming pool near Tbilisi.

Half an hour north of Tbilisi in the village of Natakhtari (near Saguramo), E60 Pool sits in front of a gorgeous modernist villa surrounded by tall trees and shady gardens.

Pin pon tables and hammocks make this a favourite afternoon chill spot.

Advance registration is essential – book through Facebook.

Sevsamora Resort & Spa (Saguramo)

Sunset over a hotel near Tbilisi, with a swimming pool and views of the mountains beyond.

Also in Saguramo, tucked behind Tbilisi National Park, Sevsamora Resort offers day passes for its indoor and outdoor pools, solarium, spa and fitness centre.

The open-air pool and hot tub are surrounded by a generous deck that looks out towards the mountains. Sneak inside the hotel for a peak at the design – as you can probably tell from the graphic artwork around the pool, the whole place is quite schmick. This is one of the few resorts in Georgia that is designed to be fully accessible.

Make a day of it and stop at one of the nearby wineries while you’re here (I recommend Kapistoni, which is just across the road).

Reservations required – book by phone.

Vake Swimming Pool (Vake)

An indoor swimming pool in Tbilisi.

Anyone who does regular swimming in Tbilisi for exercise rather than leisure will no doubt be a frequent customer of Vake Pool. While it’s a touch expensive, the location just past Vake Park (15 minutes by car from Freedom Square) is convenient to the centre.

As well as a 50m pool, the complex has a gym, sauna and jacuzzi. Sports massage, aerobics and boxing classes are on offer, and the pool is equipped with a modern water filtration system.

Lane ropes are usually in place, but occasionally several lanes will be closed off to accommodate the diving squads that train here.

Day passes are not cheap (starting from 80 GEL), so this pool is better suited to long-term visitors who can take advantage of the monthly discount. See monthly pass prices and conditions here on the website.

No reservations required.

Neptune Sport Complex (Vake)

Right next door to Vake Swimming Pool, Neptune is another solid option. It’s marketed as more of a wellness centre, with a gym, aerobics studio, sauna and massage service. The Neptune Swimming School is a popular option for kids’ swimming lessons.

There are two covered pools, one 25m and the other 12m, a generous deck and lounging area. The larger five-lane pool with ropes is suitable for laps.

The retractable roof is semi-transparent, which lets some natural light in when it’s closed. In summer, it’s usually partially or fully open for airflow. My favourite feature is the spectacular Soviet-style mosaic along one of the walls.

Locker rooms, bathrooms and the onsite cafe are all spick and span. Towels are provided. Unlimited membership packages start from 350 GEL/month.

No reservations required.

Olympic Swimming Complex (Isani)

Located south of the Old Town in Isani district (15 minutes by car), this is Georgia’s largest sports facility. As well as a 50m indoor pool there’s a second outdoor pool, a 500 square-metre sun terrace, a Finnish sauna, a gym and tennis courts.

Olympic is known for being well-maintained and for offering professional service. Swimming trainers are available starting from around 60 GEL for three sessions.

The pool and gym are often closed for competitions and special events, so be sure to check the Facebook page for announcements before you go.

No reservations required. No cash payments – card only.

Aqua Centre and Fitness (Gldani)

An undercover pool, with lane ropes and diving platforms.

North of the centre in Gldani (20 minutes by car from the Old Town), Aqua Centre is a little further out. The five-lane 25m indoor pool has windows along one wall for natural light.

This is a popular choice for kids swimming lessons so be prepared for lots of little ones splashing about. As with all these Tbilisi pools, it’s a good idea to arrive early in the morning to avoid the crowds.

Only monthly passes are available. No bookings required.

Be Pure (near Tbilisi Sea)

Hualing Pool in Tbilisi, a huge undercover complex with two pools.

Located at the southern end of Tbilisi Sea, 20 minutes by car from Freedom Square, this pool is part of the Hualing Recreation Center and hotel. The ultra-modern building is a bit of a fish out of water; but inside, everything is new and tip-top, making this one of the best pools in Tbilisi.

The seven-lane lap pool and kids’ splash pool are both well-kept. There’s plenty of natural light and ventilation thanks to the high ceilings. A huge gym, outdoor sun terrace, cafe-bar and other facilities are also available.

Monthly unlimited memberships start from 300 GEL and include access to the pool, jacuzzi, two saunas and gym.

Reservations essential for day visitors – book by phone.
