In algorithmic collusion (AC), revenue management algorithms implement tacitly collusive behaviour. This paper summarises theoretical and empirical evidence and considers how ML methods affect AC and whether regulators’ algorithms can help. It examines links between Internet regulation and competition policy.

We propose working definitions of innovation and privacy and review the literature about their interaction. We interpret the possible tensions and problems in terms of market and system failures and analyse the relevant legal and policy aspects in relation to examples of privacy invasion and/or protection by innovating companies. Using a four issue framework we analyse relevant case studies such as cloud computing and online behavioural advertising. Following a gap analysis according to our model of failure, we present a series of recommendations aimed at different stakeholders. The study was based on desk research, key informant interviews, case studies and an interactive expert consultation held in Brussels in June 2011.

Written by the trainee teachers themselves, these papers offer unique, perceptive and authentic insights into language learning in UAE government school classrooms and we will return to a similar format in the next volume, scheduled for June 2011. However, as a means of recognizing the 10th anniversary of the HCT Bachelor of Education program, this current work instead features reflections, perspectives and insights of the faculty involved in teaching and mentoring students in the HCT B.Ed over the past ten years.

There is increasing interest in using this spontaneously generated patient experience data as a data source for health research. The aim was to summarise the state of the art regarding how and why SGOPE data has been used in health research. We determined the sites and platforms used as data sources, the purposes of the studies, the tools and methods being used, and any identified research gaps. Methods: A scoping umbrella review was conducted looking at review papers from 2015 to Jan 2021 that studied the use of SGOPE data for health research. Using keyword searches we identified 1759 papers from which we included 58 relevant studies in our review. Results: Data was used from many individual general or health specific platforms, although Twitter was the most widely used data source. The most frequent purposes were surveillance based, tracking infectious disease, adverse event identification and mental health triaging. Despite the developments in machine learning the reviews included lots of small qualitative studies. Most NLP used supervised methods for sentiment analysis and classification. Very early days, methods need development. Methods not being explained. Disciplinary differences-accuracy tweaks vs application. There is little evidence of any work that either compares the results in both methods on the same data set or brings the ideas together. Conclusion: Tools, methods, and techniques are still at an early stage of development, but strong consensus exists that this data source will become very important to patient centred health research.

In particular, RAND's Drug Policy Research Center has triangulated information from household surveys, treatment admissions, mortality data, and arrestees, adjusting for double representation across these data sets of some populations, to get a general estimate of the number of problem drug users in the US (as homeless individuals are represented in treatment data, arrestee data and mortality data, although not in the household survey; criminally involved are captured in arrestee data; and so on). A similar strategy using a variety of data systems that capture different "elements" of the problem could be used in the UK, as any one of these alone provides a glimpse of the problem among a particular type of user. CHAPTER 2 Defining problem drug use 2.1 11 In our literature search we came across a paper that defined problem drug use as the "misuse of psychotropics", which are pharmaceutical drugs such as painkillers or tranquilizers. This definition, however, appears to have been derived from the situation in the region they examined, namely Kabul in Afghanistan. Nevertheless, the same article confounds the definition by stating that "an assessment of problem drug use in Kabul city found 14,298 users of pharmaceutical drugs, compared to 10,774 opium users and 7,008 heroin users" (Macdonald, 2008). Similarly, a paper on drug use in the Czech Republic identifies methamphetamine use as part of problem drug use; the paper states that data on methamphetamine trends were obtained from, among others, estimates of problem drug use in the country (Zabransky, 2007).
