The question of humour in Norwid’s literary output still has not been extensively examined. The paper analyzes Norwid’s comical works. In his early masterpieces, published between 1842 and 1852, comic elements were almost absent, but after his trip to the United States an important change can be noticed in his way of writing, and humour becomes a key elelement of his literary writing and visual art. It can be argued that his diffi cult American experiences (alienation, struggle with the new language, desperate attempts to fi nd work) changed Norwid’s perception of himself as an artist and taught him to look at his art from a distance.

"Świat Dostojewskiego jest dogłębnie personalistyczny. Wszelką myśl postrzega on i przedstawia jako pozycję osoby." (dz. cyt., s. 155). The comparative analysis of these translations reveals a variety of modifications introduced in the text, including also a set of changes obviously aimed at manipulating the Russian readers. The article provides a hypothesis to explain this issue, based on the assumption that the translational shifts result not only from deliberate attempts to alter the original meanings, but also from the translators' failure to identify and understand the cultural and historical background of Mickiewicz's work that was so significant for Polish readers of the original.

In Part I a review is done of the Russian writer's most important statements tackling the problem of Russians as the “nation-God-carrier”, and the widespread opinions about Dostoyevsky as a follower of Messianism are revised. In Part II Norwid's stance on Polish messianic attitudes is presented. Next, a comparative analysis is made of Norwid's and Dostoyevsky's opinions on the attitudes of Poles exiled to Siberia. The final part of the article is an attempt to answer the questions about the cultural or religious patterns that led both writers to the phenomenon of Messianism, and about what factors were the cause why these attitudes appear to the recipients of their texts as diametrically different.

Of primary importance is the fact that Norwid was the first Polish Romantic author to examine this problem, in terms other than dealing with the lost land of childhood and situating Poland in the centre. In Cyprian Norwid’s oeuvre urban themes, absent from other texts of Polish Romanticism, can be found. The paper argues that Norwid started by locating his centre (of existentional, religious and cultural nature) in Rome, and later, after many failed attempts at translocation, he found it in the sphere of his own memory.Ewangelina Skalińska – dr, adiunkt w Katedrze Badań nad Romantyzmem i Twórczością Cypriana Norwida WNH UKSW.
