Journal of Cross-Cultural Gerontology, 2019

Twenty-eight Middle Eastern immigrants in the greater Philadelphia area were interviewed using a semi-structured approach. Results were consistent with other research which suggests that patients benefit from family and community support in the management of their illness. However, findings also suggest that even in the presence of strong family and social support, patients report increased feelings of isolation and loneliness because they have to manage a complex illness that requires many lifestyle changes. For immigrant suffering from chronic illnesses, social gatherings, especially those that center on the consumption of traditional ethnic food, can be highly stressful because they need to avoid such foods as part of their daily treatment regimen. The results of this study have significant implications for patients, physicians, and psychologists who can benefit from an increased sensitivity to patients’ challenges in illness management by understanding how cultural factors affect compliance in diabetes treatment regimens.

As such, the study contributes to the growing body of literature describing the current limits of automatic systems for evaluating spoken proficiency, provides examples of the essential nature of various notional and comprehensive variables, supports continued development of hybrid systems, and includes suggestions for the possible utilization of additional variables for automatic analyses. Data for this study were gathered and analyzed as follows. After 4 weeks of activities related to career development, 20 native English speaking college freshmen made recordings in English explaining their career preferences. Three experiments were then conducted. Experiment 1 analyzed the recordings according to current quantitative analyses used in fully automatic evaluations of fluency. Experiment 2 examined the recordings through a perception study according to common everyday notions of fluency. Experiment 3 analyzed the recordings according to an adaptation of the comprehensive rubrics used by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) for evaluating oral proficiency. The comprehensive evaluation (Experiment 3) provided the most insight, and temporal quantitative measures (Experiment 1) provided the least insight concerning the proficiency of the 20 speakers.

Participants were 125 students in 8 classes (4 experimental, 4 control) of a group psychotherapy course that focused on the principles and techniques of cognitive behavior therapy in conjunction with psychodrama techniques. Results showed significantly higher cohesion scores in the experimental condition compared to the control condition, suggesting that collaborative story building and telling is a viable strategy for improving group cohesion. Group cohesion is often described metaphorically as the strength of the molecular attraction that holds particles of mat

Research paper thumbnail of State and Trait Depression, Physical and Social Anhedonia, Hypnotizability and Subjective Experiences during Hypnosis

Only physical anhedonia showed a weak, but significant, negative correlation with hypnotizability. Hypnosis, compared with the sitting quietly condition, facilitated lowering offeelings of sadness especially for the chronically depressed. Other results pertaining to phenomenological experiences suggest that in future studies, instead of only correlating individual difference variables with hypnotizability, it may be more fruitful to explore their relationships with what happens during hypnosis in terms of reported phenomenological experiences.

In fact, the differences between the traditional student response systems and the Olin Experimental Classroom begin with the very purposes for which these facilities are intended, and the differences extend to every aspect of t h e i r respective operation.

Comparison between instrumented and non-instrumented settings indicated no significant difference in overall response rate. However, it was observed that keysets did serve as another mode of responding, particularly for responses which need not be accompanied by oral responses, and for students who had difficulty with the course. Some software and hardware refinements are suggested to study the effects of student responses on systematically shaping instructor's behavior.

Eysenck's (1957, 1967) theory of temperament, this study examined the relationship between drug preference, drug use, and personality among incarcerated inmates. Analysis indicated a general preference for marijuana and alcohol over 8 other commonly used drugs across different personality types. Theoretical and clinical implications are offered. Hans J. Eysenck (1957), a pioneer of alcohol and other drug (AOD) research, postulated that temperament can be modified by AOD use and serves as a predictor of drug preference. His early research has stimulated generations of studies on personality and vulnerability to drug use. Whereas drug preference may or may not be implied by the use of particular drugs (as actual drug use may be a function of cost, availability, and peer influence), the majority of research (
