Arts Colleges
THE VISION OF AN ARTS COLLEGE:
"Arts Colleges will raise standards of achievement in the arts (in particular, in those specialist arts subjects related to one of the three broad areas of the arts: the performing arts, the visual arts or the media arts) for all their students across the ability range, leading to whole school improvement in performance. They will be active partners in a learning society with their local families of schools and their communities, sharing resources and developing and sharing good practice. Arts Colleges will promote an arts educational culture, which is creative, expressive, technological and vocational. They will raise the post-16 participation rate in the specialist subject areas and provide young people with the skills needed to progress into employment, further training or higher education according to their individual abilities, aptitudes and ambitions."
KEY CHARACTERISTICS:
Arts Colleges commit themselves to a four-year development plan with specific targets to improve their standards as a whole and to raise performance and participation in the specialist arts subjects. Schools can specialise in one of three broad areas of the Arts, these are:
- the performing arts: e.g. music, drama, dance and related technology (e.g. recording, lighting and production);
- the visual arts: e.g. drawing, painting, photography, film, video, computer assisted graphics and design and three-dimensional work (for example, sculpture, pottery, jewellery and costume design, textiles);
- the media arts: e.g. the artistic, technological and production aspects of the communications industry required in, for example, film, video, television, radio, journalism and advertising.
Arts Colleges have the support of industry, both financially and through the provision of advice and management support. They use and develop best practice techniques for raising educational standards. They work with other schools and the wider community in sharing facilities and educational resources.
There are currently 91 Arts Colleges operating across England.
