Pratt InstituteBrooklyn, New York HISTORY/BACKGROUND: Pratt Institute was founded in 1887 by oil entrepreneur Charles Pratt, who recognized a growing need for trained industrial workers in a changing economy. The institute has stayed true to the mission of its founder, adapting to the evolving educational needs of the nation. Today, Pratt is the oldest and largest institution of higher education devoted to aspiring artists, designers, and architects, and it has the oldest library science program in the United States. With locations in the historic Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn and in downtown Manhattan, Pratt's schools of Architecture, Art and Design, Information and Library Sciences, and Liberal Arts and Sciences enroll undergraduate and graduate students from 50 states and approximately 70 countries around the world. Top FUTURE GOALS: Pratt is working on an ambitious expansion program that includes a new building for its School of Architecture. In addition, Pratt's new state-of-the-art Design Center will connect three campus buildings, placing all of Pratt's design departments together in one complex. The institute also plans to build an exciting new Center for Digital Arts (CDA), which will provide a central place for technology education at the institute. At the heart of the CDA will be its research laboratories and advanced studies facilities, where multidisciplinary teams of faculty and students will develop new technologies for digital arts. Top

In short, Pratt alumni have helped to add form, texture, and beauty to the world in which we live. Top

Pratt is currently seeking donations to augment this tuition income. There is also a major effort underway to obtain individual, corporate, foundation, and governmental support for the capital projects already discussed. In addition, there are smaller projects on Pratt's list of capital improvements, many involving the restoration of historic buildings on campus. Top GIVING OPTIONS: Charitable gifts can generate income for life, substantially increase income-tax deductions, and significantly reduce estate taxes. Donors may contribute to Pratt with outright gifts of cash, securities, or other tangible assets, or may contribute gifts-in-kind. In addition, there are a variety of planned giving options for donors, including gifts through wills, living trusts, annuities, or life insurance. The institute also welcomes support from foundations and corporations interested in supporting Pratt and the many people served by its youth programs and public art exhibitions. Top |
