this Tuesday June 10, 2003, SABC 3 at 9h30 pm - "Boeremag" What drives men to attempt the overthrow of a government? As the trial of the twenty two right wing extremists resumes this week, Special Assignment tries to find out what it is that makes individuals believe they can take on the might of the state. We focus on "the men, the madness and the Boer prophet who inspired them". We look at who the accused are, what their plans for war entailed and ask how on earth they could have thought they would succeed. The last question will be answered by examining the prophesies of a certain "Siener van Rensburg". This Afrikaner "prophet" from the Boer War era predicted that at some point in the future the old Boer republics would be restored. It seems the latter day Boeremag have taken these prophecies literally. Many of their plans - from the date the "war" was to have begun to the place they were to gather - all come from the prophesies of Siener van Rensburg. Special Assignment will investigate what the rightwing really is about today, what threat they pose and the intellectual underpinnings of those who now call themselves the "Boeremag".
