Michael Formanek, Jazz bass, Jazz orchestra.

Studies at California State University. Performances and/or recordings with Tim Berne, Freddie Hubbard, Stan Getz, Marty Ehrlich, Chet Baker, Tony Williams, Gerry Mulligan, Mingus Big Band, Gunther Schuller, Peter Erskine, Gary Thomas, and others. Performances of his own music with a wide range of ensembles. Four albums of his music have been released to critical acclaim on the Enja label. Composition grant, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, 1995. One of 12 jazz composers to receive the 2000-2001 Chamber Music America/ Doris Duke Jazz Ensembles Project grant to compose new works. Master classes and workshops at the Sibelius Academy, Helsinki, Finland; Central Pennsylvania Jazz Festival; Vermont Jazz Center; New England Conservatory; Rhythm Conservatory, Copenhagen, Denmark; Music Academy, Malmo, Sweden; Music Conservatory; Aarhus, Denmark. Recent recording projects include Elvis Costello's newest CD, "North" on Deutsche Grammophon, Marty Ehrlich's "Line on Love" for Palmetto, and Uri Caine/Gustav Mahler "Dark Flame" for Winter and Winter records of Germany.

Peabody Jazz Bass News-

Don't forget about the Rufus Reid class that we'll be attending via Internet 2 up at Johns Hopkins on Setember 27th.� The location is Room 213 of Hodson Hall, which is the Distance Learning Classroom. It will be held from 12:30 to 12:30. Rufus will give a follow up class here at Johns Hopkins on

April 19th when he's here to perform his music with the Peabody Jazz Orchestra.

There will be a bass workshop at Peabody on Wednesday, September 21st in Goodwin Hall with one of the artists perfoming at the High Zero Festival. Peter Jacquemyn will be at Peabody from 5 to 7 PM.
