Future NC Interstate Possibilities
These have been suggested to NCDOT by people or organizations over the past few years and could become reality in the future US 74 between I-26 and I-85
A Cleveland and Gaston County Transportation Group has suggested US 74 between I-26 and I-85 be designated a 3di interstate (an I-x26 or I-x85) once the US 74 bypass of Shelby has been completed.d Garden Parkway
The same Cleveland/Gaston group has suggested the Garden Parkway, a planned toll route from I-485 to US 321 be designated an I-85 spur. The toll financing of the road may preclude this from happening, however.d
NCDOT, at the urging of a member of the Cape Fear Transportation Authority, will look into the suggestion that US 74 between I-26 and Wilmington be upgraded to an Interstate and designated Interstate 30. I-30 would need to be routed along I-40 from its current end in Little Rock AR to I-26 in NC. I-30 would then follow current US 74 to Wilmington except around Charlotte where it would use I-485.e
Other Future Interstate Suggestions
Completely unofficial ideas of mine
PTI Airport Connector
Possible number for proposed freeway that would run from I-73/Bryan Blvd near PTI Airport to split of I-40 and Business 40 west of Greensboro, or for an alternate proposal (the I-73-74 Connector) that would run the connector from Bryan Blvd. to the I-74 Winston-Salem Beltway (if both parts are built the part running from the I-73-74 Connector south to I-40, (called the 'I-40 Connector' in some proposals) could get another number). The proposed highways can be seen in this map courtesy of the Winston-Salem Journal

I-40 Greensboro Spur
Better number for the current I-40 freeway from Business 85 west to the future I-40 interchange with the Greensboro Urban Loop, replacing the I-40 designation when moved onto the Loop in 2007. NCDOT currently plans this to be designated as Business Loop 40 but, unlike the now Business Loop 85 through Greensboro, this route is up to current interstate standards and was just modernized to a 6 to 8 lane freeway.
I-95 Raleigh Spur
Number for route that would use US 64 from I-95 to I-440 now that the US 64/264 Knightdale Bypass is completed. Yes, it could be an even number like I-495 (a number recommended by a CAMPO, the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization which passed a resolution in May 2005 calling on NCDOT to make US 64 an I-95 spur, for their example signage, go HERE). Extend it to Rocky Mount east of I-95, if you want to justify the odd number designation, or along US 264 to the new US 117 freeway under construction to Goldsboro (which some officials have suggested be designated I-795c).
Interstate 193 - Braintree to Cape Cod
Yes, this is not a North Carolina route, but one from my home state of Massachusetts. The proposed designation for current MA 3 between I-93 in Braintree and US 6 at the Sagamore Bridge in Bourne. If one can take an I-95 spur from Providence, RI to Cape Cod why can't drivers from Boston to the Cape? Some others suggest this route be I-93, like HERE
