Welcome to the Richard A. Gephardt Institute for Public Service

Started in February 2005, the Gephardt Institute is one of the newest parts of Washington University. Created with a major gift from former U.S. Congressman Richard Gephardt, a native St. Louisan who represented Missouri's third district for 28 years and was twice a candidate for President of the United States, the central mission of the Gephardt Institute is to focus attention on public service, its value, its importance, its interest. In settings as diverse as large international organizations, small local governments, and non-profits of every description there is a need for enthusiastic volunteers as well as for dedicated career employees.

As the Gephardt Institute develops it will attempt to provide information about public service careers and to highlight volunteer opportunities, some for students just beginning to consider career choices and others for retirees ready to make a fresh contribution or meet a new challenge. Students, undergraduates and graduates alike, may also want to test a future career with an internship in the public or non profit sector. The Gephardt Institute will try to help.

Through workshops, lectures, and occasional conferences the Gephardt Institute intends to provide information about both public service and significant public issues. Most generally, the Gephardt Institute plans to provide services and programs intended to promote informed civic engagement, political participation, and public service.

Congratulations to Washington University for making the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Role
