THE ASHOURA ATTACKS

<back 3/02/2004 - The only target of this attacks were the Shia Muslims who were celebrating their religious festival Ashuora. Nearly simultaneous attacks in Iraq and Pakistan killed 228 people. More than six blasts caused by rockets and suicide bombers hit the streets of the holy Iraqi city for Shiites, Kerbala. About a million people came to that city to commemorate the Ashoura holiday (the death of Hussein, Muhammad's nephew), so the streets were filled with pilgrims. Shortly afterwards, suicide bombers detonated themselves in and around the main Shiite shrine in Baghdad, in the Khadimiya district. In Iraq, 181 people were killed. An attack agains Shiites happened also in Quetta, Pakistan. Exstremists opened fire on a celebrating crowd, killing 47.
