Alex Smith

Alex Smith was signed by Andy Dickson from Dunbar United for the princely sum of £83, and during his eight years at East End Park went on to make 298 appearances, scoring 98 goals.

Alex made his Pars debut in September 1958 against Raith Rovers, a game which was eventually abandoned, and went on to play in some of the most famous Pars games played. He played in 23 European ties including the games against Ujpest Doza, Everton, Valencia and Athletic Bilbao, and scored five goals. As well as playing in the 1961 Scottish Cup Final, he also played in the 1965 final against Celtic.

In the 1961 final replay, although he didn't get his name onto the scoresheet, Alex was responsible for the Pars second goal. Having attempted to chip Haffey in the Celtic goal, the keeper was unable to hold the ball, and dropped it at the feet of the approaching Charlie Dickson, who rounded the keeper to score.

One of the finest players ever to don the Pars black and white, the surprise was that Smith was never capped by Scotland. A skilful player and often seen as the brains behind the Dunfermline team, he was by his own omission, never the quickest player around.

In August 1966, Alex was transferred to Rangers, for a then record fee between Scottish clubs of £55,000.

Landlord of the pub at Coaledge, Alex is still a regular at East End Park.
