Politics in America District Profile
The Republican-leaning 10th takes in the state’s mountainous northeastern corner and traces its eastern border to Augusta’s GOP-heavy suburbs. In the west, Athens is home to the University of Georgia.
Higher education jobs lend stability to the district’s economy, and the University of Georgia provides service and health care jobs. Agriculture remains an economic mainstay for many in the 10th: dairy, cattle, corn, soybeans and some cotton are produced in the district. The district’s northern tier is largely rural, but the Blue Ridge Mountains and a chain of lakes along the South Carolina border are popular destinations for tourists, retirees and Atlanta-area residents with weekend homes.
The 10th’s southeastern arm takes in Augusta’s northern and western suburbs in the district’s portion of Richmond County and includes all of fast-growing Columbia County, a bedroom community for Augusta. Fort Gordon, in Richmond County, was spared from BRAC closures and is home to the Army Signal Center. The Savannah River Site, a nuclear facility located across the river in South Carolina, remains a major employer in the region, despite losing half of its jobs since the mid-1990s. Augusta is also a major manufacturing and retail center.
The 10th is decidedly Republican, and the majority of the district’s population live in rural areas that support the GOP. Rep. Norwood won every county in the district in 2006 except for Clarke County, home to Athens, a liberal college town. The portion of Richmond in the 10th is the most GOP-friendly area of the county, and the suburbs in Columbia County are also overwhelmingly Republican. George W. Bush would have won the redistricted 10th with 65 percent of the vote in 2004.
