Founded in 1899, Brandon University is situated in Manitoba’s second largest city and attracts students interested in obtaining an excellent education in an environment geared to the individual. Our people, facilities, programs and services, and warm Prairie hospitality set us apart from other universities. Small class sizes, faculty who are easily accessible to students, a compact campus, a rural focus, and a diverse student population combine to form a stimulating, supportive, and personalized learning experience.

Brandon University is dedicated to the liberal arts and sciences model of interdisciplinary education and offers undergraduate degrees in such areas as business administration, music, arts, fine arts, science, environmental science, nursing, psychiatric nursing, and education as well as graduate programs in music, education, and rural development. Brandon University is also home to the innovative Applied Disaster and Emergency Studies program.

The university has a longstanding commitment to First Nations citizens, and with the First Nations and Aboriginal Counselling degree program, is a recognized leader in the field of Aboriginal studies and education.

The Brandon University Bobcats have a tradition of excellence in interuniversity sport, and the School of Music and affiliated Conservatory are considered among the finest in Canada. Brandon University demonstrates that teaching and concern for students is not incompatible with research.

Brandon University faculty have received national awards for research in physics, astronomy, geology, mathematics and social sciences. Brandon University’s artists have received top recognition in Canada and the United States. The music school attracts extremely talented performers and has internationally renowned composers on faculty.

The university offers a number of distributed learning courses using a variety of technologies including video, audio, and computer-mediated communication. Brandon University is also a co-participant in Campus Manitoba, a distance education program which offers a selection of university-level courses in numerous rural Manitoba communities.

Brandon’s liberal arts curriculum stands out as a refreshing alternative. We deliver rich content, but we also teach students how to apply knowledge as well as how to perform and communicate, innovate and be critical thinkers.

Student facilities and services

Personal support services
Day care centre, work study program, emergency phones, international student office, Indigenous peoples centre, counseling, bookstore, dining, residence life programming.

Academic support services
Academic advisors, career planning and placement services, English for academic purposes program, , learning skills specialist, Native student services, peer tutoring, prior learning assessment and recognition, services for students with disabilities, web access to library holdings, writing and math centre.

First-year student programs
Pre-orientation/overview sessions throughout the summer, general orientation in fall; student leader program; sessions for First Nations, international, and mature students; group workshops and individual assistance with learning, writing and math skills; peer tutoring program.

Housing
On-campus: Brandon University can accommodate approximately 450 students in three traditional-style residences: male-only, female-only, and co-ed. All residences offer double or single occupancy rooms. First-year students are usually assigned to a double occupancy room since single rooms are primarily allotted to upper-year students. A meal plan is mandatory for residents. First-year students are guaranteed a room in residence. The distribution is on a first-come, first-served basis. Annual costs: room, 2,321.16−2,321.16 - 2,321.16−3,213.68 (double) and 3,142.26−3,142.26 - 3,142.26−4,106.54 (single); minimum meal plan, $2,989.76.

Off-campus: Housing is 400−400 - 400−800 per month.

Student assistance
Undergraduate/Graduate: Brandon University awards approximately 130 entrance scholarships, ranging from 200to200 to 200to5,000 and approximately 100 bursaries, ranging from 200to200 to 200to2,000 to students entering the faculties of arts, science, education, music and health studies. Approximately 15 percent of first-year students are recipients of institutional financial awards. Scholarships are based on academic achievement, and leadership, while bursaries are based on academic achievement and financial need. Limited funding is available from the Student Travel Fund for students to participate in off-campus learning experiences at conferences or workshops. Several funds are available to aid students in emergency situations.

University research

A small, primarily undergraduate institution with limited graduate ability, Brandon University is proud of its long tradition of teaching, research and scholarly excellence.

Brandon University has graduate programs in Music, Education, and Rural Development and has recently added new undergraduate degrees in Environmental Studies, Liberal Arts, Interdisciplinary Studies (Arts), Gender and Women’s Studies and the Bachelor of Nursing. Each new degree program builds on the University’s strengths and provides opportunities for new research partnerships.

Brandon University is very proud of its five Canada Research Chairs -- history, poetry, anthropology, systems and modelling, and biology, and will be appointing a sixth Chair in the coming years. The University has received a number of significant grants over the past several years, including a research grant to examine the impact of Aboriginal cultural instruction on learning, school attendance and retention of Aboriginal students, and a grant from the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) to facilitate community dialogue in a series of northern communities in the provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

With funding from the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the Province of Manitoba, and other sources, Brandon University has attracted more than $3.5 M for the establishment of new research laboratories. These include infrastructure to support research in geology, environmental science, cell biology, multimedia in creative writing and poetry, archaeology, and other important areas.

Brandon University’s research funding from external agencies has nearly doubled since 2003, and we expect funding to continue to increase as new and existing researchers continue to excel.

International education

Brandon University students may go on exchanges to: the Universidad de Colima, Mexico, Nanjing Xiaozhuang College (PR China), or Tamkang University (Republic of China). An agreement exists between Brandon University and Dalian University in Dalian, China, which allows for the exchange of professors and visiting scholars. Last year, over 170 international students from more than 30 countries attended regular and English language studies at Brandon University. In the fall of 2007, the university welcomed its first two recipients of the Schreyer International Bursary, which provides tuition, room, and board to students from African countries.
