Alex Monrovia, CA | The third photo (right front view) is correctly identified by the USAF Museum's imprint as the North American XB-21. Its company design number was NA-21 and its USAAC designation was XB-21 (not to be confused with the Boeing-Stearman XA-21, an unrelated aircraft). The middle photo (left front view) is likewise of the sole NA-21 (as originally marked in its lower right corner) but has a Boeing imprint and copyright only because Boeing now owns North American. The first photo is of a North American NA-40, a wholly different design, and is out of place on the XB-21 page. 11/06/2007 @ 12:02 [ref: 18427] |

Rex Lowe New Orleans, LA | The photo identifying the XB-21 (the third picture) is mistakenly identified as a North American bomber design. It is actually a Boeing model correctly identified in the second photo. These two aircraft are unrelated to one another. (I was employed at North American Aircraft Operations, Rockwell International for ten years). 08/15/2007 @ 06:41 [ref: 17612] |
The Boeing Company Chicago, IL | NA-21 DRAGONFirst Flight: Dec. 22, 1936The experimental NA-21 Dragon was North American's first venture into multiengine design. It was a high-altitude bomber armed with single .30-inch machine guns in each of five positions, including in a ball-type turret in the nose. The NA-21 could carry 10,000 pounds of bombs short distances or carry 2,200 pounds of bombs for 1,900 miles. After a few small changes, the NA-21 was accepted for testing at Wright Field but orders did not follow. The Air Force bought the single NA-21 in 1939 and designated it the XB-21.Copyright 2003 The Boeing Company - All rights reserved 02/16/2003 @ 04:01 [ref: 6324] |
