A Message from the Lieutenant Governor

of British Columbia

It is said that “April showers bring May flowers” and with the recent cool and wet weather here at Government House I hope that is true! It is in this kind of weather that I most enjoy sitting in a comfortable chair near the fireplace and reading a good book. This month I encourage all of you to take time out of your busy schedules to do some reading: to yourself, to your children or grandchildren or to your parents! It is time well spent.

This month I am attending many events related to literacy and learning. Early on I am visiting La’u,welnew Tribal School in Brentwood Bay where I will address the students and return Write Me a Story submissions to the grade 3-4 class. Later in the month I am attending the finals of Tillicum Community School’s Read for the Top contest. I am also participating in a Rally and Walk for Literacy in my hometown of Chilliwack and visiting the Fraser Valley Regional Historica Fair and viewing some of the student projects.

April is also the time of year for the BC Book Prizes Gala. I am attending this event in Vancouver and presenting the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Literary Excellence.

This award was established in 2003 by my predecessor and the Government House Foundation to recognize British Columbian writers who have contributed to the development of literary excellence in the province. Here in BC we are blessed with many talented writers whose prose enrich our lives and touch our souls.

I ask all visitors to this website to explore the new literacy section. You will find information about the literacy program, archived illustrations, stories from students and links to other literacy programs and resources throughout the province.

Until next month – happy reading!
