It is named for fabled Boston Red Sox pitcher Ernie Shore, who retired to the Winston-Salem area and eventually served as the Forsyth County Sheriff. After the 2008 season it was sold to Wake Forest University as the Carolina League franchise anticipated the move to a new downtown stadium.
