While it is a story of one infantry regiment, its experiences have been shared by the many regiments that fought on this rugged peninsula in actions as ferocious and desperate as any in the anneals of history. It is the story of a team, a fighting team, for it is the team....... At my suggestion before I left the Far East, a regimental executive in Korea prepared a critique of the battle for Hill 1243, known as "Heartbreak Ridge," which occurred on 3 September 1951. I believe this critique contains manyh valuable combat lessons, and illustrates a problem of tactical air support. This battle is a fine example of commanders and troups making maximum use of the means available to overcome obstacales in the particular situations which confronts them. Read the full report in Adobe Reader ******************** The following was reported by 40th ID 3rde Bde Alumni Assoc. They obtained it from the Military Press newspaper dated 5/1/01 obtained at Moffett Field, CA US POW/MIA-KOREA: DOD specialist arrived in North Korea to begin operations to recover the remains of servicemen missing in action from the Korean War. The 28 person team from Army Identification Laboratory Hawaii will be there 30 days. If remains are recovered they will be airlifted from Pyongyang, and repatriated at the end of this month (May). The US and Korean agreement calls for 10 joint recovery operations. Eight of the operations will be in the areas of Unsan, Kaechon and Kujang where 1st Cavalry, 2nd Infantry and 25th Infantry fought in November 1950. Two operations will be on the east and west sides of the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea. Analysts believe that as many as 750 U.S. soldiers and Marines may have been lost in Nov-Dec. 1950 near Chosin. So far the joint efforts have recovered 107 sets of remains since 1996. Eight have been identified and returned to their families for burial with full military honors. About 10 more are in the final stages of forensic identification. More than 8,100 American servicemen are still missing in action from the Korean War. ********************** Central Identification Laboratory-Hawaii The Central Identification Laboratory-Hawaii (CILHI) is a US Army organization responsible for the search, recovery and identification of unaccounted-for servicemen from all conflicts.
