Biography
Denis William Anson Marshall was born in Marton in September 1943. He was educated at Norwood School (Gisborne), Hereworth School (Havelock North) and Christs College (Christchurch). He attended Lincoln University as part of the Kellogg New Zealand Rural Leadership Programme, and was a Nuffield Farming Scholar to the United Kingdom in 1983.
Mr Marshall has been farming at Marton since 1965 and a company director since 1970. He was a member of the Rangitikei-Wanganui Catchment Board between 1978 and 1984, and was Deputy Chairman towards the end of that period.
After he was elected to Parliament as Member for Rangitikei in 1984, Mr Marshall served as Chairman of the Caucus Primary Industries Committee and as a member of the Primary Production and Resource Management Select Committees.
He was appointed Opposition associate spokesperson for agriculture in 1987 and spokesperson on conservation and horticulture in early 1989.
Denis Marshall was appointed Minister of Conservation, Minister of Lands, Minister of Survey and Land Information, Minister in Charge of the Valuation Department, Associate Minister of Agriculture and Associate Minister of Employment in the second Bolger administration from 6 November 1993. He was Minister of Conservation, Minister of Science (DSIR) and Associate Minister of Agriculture and Associate Minister of Employment in the first Bolger Administration of 1990-93.
Married with three adult children, Mr Marshall lives near Marton in the Rangitikei. His hobbies are tramping, skiing and jetboating.
